Hertz car rental in Brisbane allows you to see this vibrant city and its surrounding areas with convenience and comfort. Brisbane is the state capital of Queensland and is the third largest city in Australia with much to see and do. Whether you want to stay in the city for sightseeing, or use it as a base to see more of Queensland, renting a car gives you the flexibility to do everything at your own pace.
With a motorway network surround the city centre, Brisbane is great to navigate by car, while the coast roads let you see some of the city’s fabulous beaches. There are also amazing drives out to some of Queensland’s stunning national parks, making Brisbane a great city to drive in.
You will need a full driving licence and must be over 21 to rent a car in Brisbane. If you are from outside Australia you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Brisbane, take a look at our page about renting a car in Australia.
If you choose to rent a car in Brisbane, you will find it much the same as driving in many other big cities. You can expect congestion during peak rush hour times, with the traffic easing somewhat at weekends and off-peak times. Many roads in the Central Business District (CBD) are part of a one-way system, so be sure you know where you’re going if you drive into this part of the city. Otherwise, driving in Brisbane is much like driving in the UK.
As you’d expect in a major city, there are lots of options for parking, with car parks and Park & Ride services in abundance. Street parking is tightly regulated so be sure you follow the rules so you don’t get fined. Much of the city comes under the Brisbane Central Traffic Area, which means you can park for a maximum of two hours unless there are meters in place or signs advising otherwise. This is enforced between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and between 7am and midday on Saturdays.

Several motorways interconnect around the outskirts of Brisbane to form a ringroad as well as a network leading out of the city. This makes getting around the city incredibly easy as you can avoid the complicated one-way system for the most part.
However, visitors should be aware that several of these roads incur tolls at different points. You cannot pay cash at these tolls and usually you are required to pay afterwards via a website or purchase a pre-paid transponder before you travel. Your Hertz branch can arrange a Hertz Toll Day Pass for you for AUS$11.10 per day, covering all your tolls in a flat fee — just ask when you collect your car.
Driving rules and regulations in Australia are not too dissimilar to those in the UK, and this similarity also applies to the layout of the road networks. When you rent a car in Brisbane you will see that a motorway system runs in and around the city, connecting to ‘A’ roads and ‘B’ roads to filter traffic to different destinations. These in turn link to the local neighbourhood streets within the city.
As with most cities, speed limits apply and are heavily enforced. Motorways carry a limit of 110km/h or 70mph, while main roads allow you to travel at 100km/h (60mph). Urban roads are capped at 50km/h (30mph) while you have to slow to 40km/h or 25mph in school zones within the city. Local signage will advise you on your current road’s particular speed limit.
