Hertz in Cairns Airport (CNS)

Cairns Airport is in northern Queensland, and it’s the biggest airport in the region. It’s only 4 miles north of Cairns city centre (the fourth most popular city in Australia), close to Trinity Bay. Cairns Airport also serves many major destinations in Australia, including the Great Barrier Reef and Cape Tribulation. They’re easy to reach from here, especially when you hire a car from Hertz Car Rental.

Hertz Car Rental is an international provider of top-quality rental vehicles. For almost 100 years, we’ve been helping drivers explore destinations at their own pace, in the privacy of their own hire car. Whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure, customers arriving at the Cairns Airport branch of Hertz Car Rental can enjoy the convenience and comfort of self-drive travel – it’s the best way to see what Australian has to offer. Take your pick from a wide range of vehicles and take control of your adventure.

About the airport

The origins of Cairns Airport date back to 1934, when locals began raising money to build an airport. Cairns City Council purchased 162 hectares of land and created three runways from cinders, red earth, weathered rock and sand. During World War II, the Australian Government bought the airport to serve the Royal Australian Air Force, and the main runway was extended. Later, in the 1960s, the airport upgraded so more jets could land, and it’s continued to expand ever since. Today, Cairns Airport is the seventh busiest airport in Australia.

Cairns Airport has two terminals for domestic and international flights. It’s simple to walk from one to the other – they’re only 250m apart and connected by a covered walkway. You’ll find the Cairns Airport branch of Hertz Car Rental in both terminals, and the parking area for hire cars is in the northern end of the car park directly opposite Terminal 2.

How to rent a car at Cairns Airport

The Hertz Car Rental branch at Cairns Airport is open Monday to Sunday from 4am to 11.30pm. You’ll need to provide a flight number when picking up a vehicle at Cairns Airport. If a valid flight number is not present, the vehicle will be ready at the Domestic terminal.

You must be at least 21 years of age to rent a car through Hertz at Cairns Airport. Drivers under the age of 25 will be eligible to rent, subject to a young driver surcharge. At the time of rental, you’ll need to present a valid full driving license from your country of residence, held for a minimum of one year (or three years in Tasmania). If applicable, you also need to bring along an International Driving Permit (IDP), including the original licence. Rentals paid for by a valid credit, Visa/Mastercard debit or charge card will be subject to a card surcharge rate of 1.35% (includingGST).

Additional information:

• A satellite navigation system fitted into some of our rental makes light of planning your route around the region and beyond.
• Why not stay connected on the go? Select the option to connect to Wi-Fi in your hire car from Hertz Car Rental.

Nearby attractions

Cairns Airport is the best airport to access northern Queensland from; renting a car gives you the freedom to explore beyond the nearby city. Head down to Cairns Pier for stunning views of the town (especially at night), or drive out of town to nearby Trinity Bay for the day and enjoy panoramic vistas out to sea. You could also travel inland from Cairns Airport and journey to the Atherton Tableland – ideal if you want to see Australia’s wild side. Trek through the forests or take a stroll to Lake Tinaroo and the Tinaroo Dam.
