Hertz in Melbourne

Hertz car rental in Melbourne is one of the easiest ways to see Australia’s cultural capital, giving you the convenience and flexibility of being able to control your own itinerary. As Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city, renting a car means you can cover the huge area and visit tourist attractions in all of the different districts, or head further afield to see the wider Victoria area.

Famous for its stunning Victorian architecture, Melbourne is a delight to drive around, with fabulous buildings everywhere you look, from Flinders Street Railway Station to the Parliament House of Victoria. With its well-developed road network, Melbourne is a pleasure to explore if you’re hiring a car in the city.

Driving and Parking in Melbourne

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 21 to rent a car in Melbourne. If you are from outside Australia you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Melbourne, take a look at our page about renting a car in Australia.

Melbourne has the largest tram network in the world so drivers in the city centre should be aware that tramlines run down the centre of many streets. So you will need to take extra care at turnings and intersections in particular. Otherwise, driving in Melbourne is much like driving in any other major city. During rush hour periods, journeys will inevitably take longer so you should plan for this and factor it into your itinerary.

Parking in Melbourne is relatively easy with plenty of spaces available. When you rent a car in Melbourne, street parking using a meter or ticket machine can be expensive, however, with prices as high as AUS$5.50 per hour. Private car parks around the city offer a good alternative with all-day parking options.

Driving in and around Melbourne

Key Routes

Melbourne is well served by its road network, with a choice of motorways and state routes running through the city, making access to the different neighbourhoods easy. It’s worth noting that some stretches of the city motorways are toll roads, with CityLink on parks of the M1, M2 and Batman Avenue, and EastLink on parts of the M3.

You will need a pass for these roads, as they do not accept cash payments. Your Hertz branch can help with a Hertz Toll Day Pass for AUS$14.30 per day. This covers all of your toll road charges, making them easier to manage during your stay and giving you quick access to city routes.

Major Highways

If you rent a car in Melbourne and you wish to drive out of the city to explore Victoria’s other towns, coast or national parks, you have a great highway network to give you access. Although the wider Victoria area uses a system of motorways and ‘A,' ‘B’ and ‘C’ roads, Melbourne’s immediate network is made up of motorways and numerical State Routes, which radiate out from the city centre and connect with the statewide road network.

Australians enforce their speeding laws so, to avoid a fine, you need to make sure you’re aware of the local speed restrictions. Limits can change on any given road, but as a general guide, highest speed zones (e.g., motorways) are limited at 110km/h or 70mph. Rural roads have a limit of 100km/h or 60mph, urban areas are limited to 50km/h (30mph and, in school zones you must slow to 40km/h (25mph). Melbourne employs clear signage on its routes so you can be sure what the local speed limits are.
