Hertz in Salzburg Airport

Salzburg International Airport is situated 3.1km from the centre of Salzburg and 2km from the border with Germany. In 2015 almost 2 million passengers passed through its two terminals. Connected to Salzburg and the rest of Austria by excellent highways, Salzburg Airport is ideally located for exploring the historic city and wider region by car, with premium quality vehicles from Hertz Car Rental.

Hertz Car Rental has for almost a century been a leading provider of rental cars to a wide range of its international customers, from budget to luxury models. Hertz Car Rental has been helping drivers to explore the world in comfort and at their own pace, for leisure or business purposes. Customers arriving at the Salzburg International Airport branch of Hertz Car Rental will enjoy the great comfort and convenience afforded by self-drive, and can choose from a range of vehicles depending on their particular requirements.

About the airport

The site of Salzburg International Airport has been used for aviation purposes since 1910, with the years leading up to World War II seeing a steady expansion in facilities and routes. Seized by the Nazis at the outbreak of war, the airport was subsequently used as a base for Messerschmitt ME 262 flights, and retaliatory raids on the city failed to damage it. In 1966 a new terminal was opened, and in 2016 the low-cost Eurowings German airline opened its second base in Austria here with flights to six destinations across Europe.

Salzburg International Airport has two terminal buildings, with Terminal 2 handling seasonal peak-time traffic. The airport is used for passenger transport only. The Salzburg International Hertz branch can be found near Arrivals in Terminal 1.

How to rent a car at Salzburg International Airport

The Hertz Car Rental branch is open Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 10.00pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 9.00am to 10.00pm. Hertz provides a pick-up and drop-off out-of-hours service, which can be arranged through the Reservation Centre or offline.

You must be at least 25 years of age to rent a car through Hertz at Salzburg International Airport. This applies to one class of the vehicles available, with other classes requiring that you be at least 19 or 21 on payment of a supplementary young driver charge. When renting a car here you’ll need to have a full EU driving license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) if you are coming from a non-EU country. A valid passport from your country of origin is also required, or a valid ID should you be resident in an EU member country. It’s possible to arrange for advanced collection, and if you do this you’ll be required to show all the appropriate paperwork when you pick up your vehicle. You can make payments by credit or debit card.

Additional information:

• A Chauffeur-Drive service is made available by Hertz Car Rental for passengers who cannot or do not wish to drive themselves.

• Some models of vehicle are fitted with a satellite navigation system, which is useful for getting around the region, including the built-up Salzburg area.

Nearby attractions

The highways and byways of Austria have excellent signage and are very well maintained. Both these factors are important in a region where driving can be challenging in the often long and harsh winters. Use the extensive road system to explore great cities like Salzburg, home to Mozart’s birthplace and the Hellbrunn Palace, and further afield in this breathtakingly beautiful country of lakes and mountains.
