Hertz in Calgary

Calgary is the biggest city in Alberta, Canada and so a car is essential for getting around, especially if you plan on seeing some of the nearby national parks. Hertz car rental in Calgary makes it easy to find the car that’s right for you with several branches in the city and at the airport. Whether you’ve just arrived or have been in the city for a while, there’s a location nearby to help you get around the city more easily.

Calgary is a huge metropolitan area known as much for its areas of outstanding natural beauty as it is for its urban sights. The four quadrants of the city boast a fantastic road network that’s easy to navigate and great to drive, letting you see everything from Calgary Zoo to the Canada Olympic Park and Inglewood Bird Sanctuary & Nature Park.

Driving and Parking in Calgary

You will need a full driving license and must be over 20 to rent a car in Calgary. If you are from outside Canada you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Calgary, take a look at our page about renting a car in Canada.

Driving in Calgary is much like driving in most major cities in that it gets particularly busy during rush hour traffic. Calgary is quite unique in that it employs ‘lane reversal’ during some busy weekday periods. This means that on larger streets, traffic flow is increased in one direction by using a lane normally for traffic going the other way. Calgary also gets particularly heavy snow in winter, meaning driving can be tough for those not used to it.

The snow also affects parking to some extent in that after heavy snowfall, some routes in the city which are designated as ‘snow removal routes’ become no-parking zones for up to 72 hours. As well as private car parks, there are several on-street parking options with ParkPlus pay machines. Using these you can pay for your parking with cash or a card, with no need to print a ticket — just use your zone number and licence plate number.

Driving in and around Calgary

Key Routes

Probably the most important route through Calgary is Highway 2, which runs the length of the city, taking in the airport on its way. Despite being a major highway, it travels through some truly picturesque parts of Calgary, including along the banks of the Bow River.

Highway 201, on the other hand, forms a ring road around the outskirts of Calgary, allowing you to access most city neighbourhoods while bypassing the city streets and connecting with most of Calgary’s major arterial routes. When you rent a car in Calgary, these roads will prove invaluable in getting around quickly.

Major Highways

Calgary is connected to the rest of Alberta via a series of provincial highways. Highway 2 connects it to the towns of Red Deer and Edmonton. To get further north again to Fort McMurray, you would take Highway 63.

Highway 1 - the Trans Canada Highway - links Calgary to British Colombia on one side and Saskatchewan on the other. It’s possible to follow the Trans Canada Highway right across Canada, or simply take a road trip into the neighbouring areas.

Remember that when driving in Canada, you drive on the right and pass on the left. If you are travelling slowly, you should move over to the right hand lane (on multi-lane roads) and allow faster vehicles to pass you safely. Speeding laws are enforced in Canada and several regions (including Alberta) use speed cameras to catch those breaking the limit.
