Hertz in Vancouver

Hertz has several conveniently located branches for car rental in Vancouver, based at Vancouver International Airport and several city centre locations including major hotels and train stations. Renting a car gives you a flexible option to travel around this amazing city, and means you can get to where you need to be at your own pace. Vancouver’s excellent road network and parking facilities make driving a great way to get around.

If you rent a car in Vancouver, you also get to take in the breathtaking sights of Canada’s third largest city. Sitting between the Pacific Ocean and the Coastal Mountains, it is surrounded by the type of natural beauty you won’t find in other major cities. Known for its active sports and cultural scenes, Vancouver has plenty to offer tourists, or business travellers looking to relax after a busy day. Renting a car means you can take it all in, from Stanley Park to Telus World of Science and BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

Driving and Parking in Vancouver

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 25 to rent a car in Vancouver, or over 20 if paying an age differential charge. If you are from outside Canada you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Vancouver, take a look at our page about renting a car in Canada.

In Vancouver, as elsewhere in Canada, you drive on the right and pass on the left. You must carry your driving licence with you at all times. Wearing a seatbelt is compulsory, and it is the driver’s responsibility to ensure all passengers are wearing their seatbelts as well. The use of mobile phones while driving is also prohibited. When you rent a car in Vancouver (and British Columbia as a whole) you should be aware that many intersections have flashing green traffic lights. Unlike in most other parts of North America, these actually indicate a traffic signal that can only be activated by a cyclist or pedestrian. When activated, they will turn red, allowing the pedestrian or cyclist to cross and should be obeyed — as should the corresponding stop signs on side streets.

Parking in Vancouver is straightforward, thanks to a variety of on-street parking around the city. Time limited parking means you can park for one or two hours, although this can be shorter at busier times. Parking meters can also be found with prices changing depending on demand. Meters are in effect from Monday to Sunday from 9am to 10pm, and parking is free outside these times. Be sure to check parking restrictions carefully so you don’t incur a fine.

Driving in and around Vancouver

Key Routes

Vancouver is an easy city to navigate, with a grid system in place that makes getting from A to B very simple. Highways 1A, 7, 7A and 99 intersect the city, allowing you to bypass slower city streets and get to your destination quickly and easily. These also take in some of the city’s most beautiful sites, taking you past Vancouver Harbour and Fraser River, as well as through Stanley Park.

Major Highways

When you rent a car in Vancouver, you may well want to see more of British Columbia, or more of Canada as a whole. Highway 1 (or the Trans-Canada Highway) cuts right through Canada, and you can pick it up in Vancouver, following it all the way to Calgary in neighbouring Alberta, taking in some of the stunning National Parks along the way.
** When the booking is cancelled within seven days of being made.
