Hertz car rental in Toronto is incredibly convenient and easy thanks to several Hertz branches located around the city and our commitment to amazing customer service and value. As Toronto has a fantastic road network, brilliant links to the TransCanada Highway and some great parking options, hiring a car is one of the best ways to see the city, whether for business or leisure.

Toronto is a large city so a car is particularly useful if you want to explore the Greater Toronto Area. There’s plenty to see and do in the city itself as the capital of the Ontario province, but the city’s highway network and arterial roads makes it easy to access the wider area.

Driving and Parking in Toronto

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 20 to rent a car in Toronto. If you are from outside Canada you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Toronto, take a look at our page about renting a car in Canada.

There are some specific rules of the road when it comes to driving in Canada that you should watch out for. For instance, you should never overtake a school bus. If one stops and flashes its red lights, traffic in both directions must stop. It is illegal to talk on your mobile phone when driving in Canada and the use of child car seats is compulsory for all children weighing less than 20kg. If you choose to rent a car in Toronto, you should be sure to bear all of this in mind.

Parking in the centre of Toronto is metered in designated parking bays, with prices varying by zone. Zone AA near the Entertainment District is priced at C$4 per hour, central Zone A charges C$3 per hour and Zone B is priced at C$2.50 per hour. There are also several private car parks around the city offering short and long-term parking.

Driving in and around Toronto

Key Routes

Major routes through Toronto include the scenic Don Valley Parkway, which takes a meandering route through the city’s many parks and green spaces before connecting with Highway 404. The Ontario 401 Express cuts across the city, connecting neighbourhoods such as York and Scarborough within the city limits, and heading northwest to Ottawa, and southeast to the US border near Detroit.

Also starting in Toronto is Highway 400, which heads up around Lake Simcoe to join Route 11 on the TransCanada Highway.

Major Highways

There are several road types in the Canadian province of Ontario, which you’ll come to discover if you rent a car in Toronto.

The biggest roads in the Toronto area are the 400-Series King’s Highways. These major routes have speed limits of between 80km/h and 100km/h (50-60mph) and are the fastest way to get across the city and link up with the Greater Toronto Area and the rest of Ontario. Be aware that there are strict anti-speeding laws in Ontario, so do make sure you are mindful of local speed restrictions.

Also within Toronto are major and minor arterial roads, which are akin to busy main roads. Speed limits here are 40 to 60km/h (25 to 40mph) and these offer the links between the King’s Highways and the smaller local routes. Toronto’s road system is easy to navigate, just pay attention to local signage.
