Hertz in Lille

If you’re looking for car rental in Lille, Hertz has multiple branches around the city, including at Lille Airport, Gare de Flandres and Gare TGV Lille Europe. Car rental in Lille is easy and one of the best ways to see the city — especially if you want to explore further afield — whether you’re travelling for business or pleasure. Renting a car with Hertz means you can stay comfortable whatever the weather, and travel at your own pace.

Positioned close to France’s border with Belgium, Lille is the country’s fifth largest metropolitan area. The city centre is stunningly picturesque, with beautiful architecture such as the Place du Géneral-de-Gaulle, La Vielle Bourse, the Opera and the Chamber of Commerce. If you’re looking for some of Lille’s historical gems then head for Notre Dame de la Treille, a cathedral featuring a museum of sacred artworks. If you’re travelling with the family then there’s plenty of fun to be had at the Zoo de Lille in the grounds of the Citadel.

Driving and Parking in Lille

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 25 to rent a car in Lille, or over 21 if paying an age differential charge. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Lille, take a look at our page about renting a car in France.

Remember that when you’re exploring Lille, you drive on the right and overtake on the left, while at intersections, drivers must give way to vehicles approaching from the right. There are some other rules when driving in Lille and other areas of France too. For instance, it is prohibited to use your car’s horn for anything other than giving warning to other drivers and in built-up areas, this is restricted further so it can be used only in cases of immediate danger. After sunset, the use of the horn should be replaced by flashing your lights.

If you need to find parking, there are plenty of 24/7 supervised car parks that charge varying rates, depending on the length of your stay. You will also find several pay-and-display parking zones around the city, although these tend to fill up fast. If you are shopping at the Carrefour hypermarket located in the Eurolille shopping centre, then you will be able to access free parking, although you will need to prove you’ve shopped at Carrefour.

Key Routes

When you rent a car in Lille, you will find the city centre easy to navigate, thanks to its grid layout. One of the city’s key driving routes is the D750, which forms a ring road around the city centre, giving quick and easy access to most of the major tourist spots. At its northernmost point, it takes you past the Citadel and its beautiful grounds. While Lille is an easy city to drive in, it’s recommended that you avoid rush hour, when congestion is at its worst.

Major Highways

Lille has the densest convergence of Autoroutes in France outside of Paris, with the A1, A22, A23, A25 and A27 all meeting there. Northwards, the Autoroutes take you to Dunkirk or into Belgium or, if your travels take you in a southerly direction, you can drive to Paris or Lyon. Be aware that some cities in France take part in the Clean Air scheme, so you must purchase a sticker for your car before entering specified zones. These can be obtained for a small fee.
** When the booking is cancelled within seven days of being made.
