Hertz in Cologne

Car rental in Cologne is quick and easy, thanks to several Hertz branches in convenient locations around the city, including at Cologne Airport. This means you can rent a car as soon as you land in Cologne and keep it for the duration of your trip, returning it to any of our outlets in the region. While the city centre itself is small enough to explore on foot, getting into the centre from the airport or other parts of Germany is quickest and easiest via the Autobahn. So having access to a car makes your schedule more flexible, and gives you more time to spend doing things you enjoy.

Hiring a car in Cologne also makes it easier to visit one of Germany’s top motoring attractions: the Nürburgring. This iconic track is just over an hour’s drive from the city, and is a must-see for anyone into cars or racing. There’s plenty to see and do within Cologne itself, which is considered to be one of the country’s hotspots for media tourism and business. So no matter what brings you to Cologne, take time to view the UNESCO-protected Kölner Dom, or visit the Schokoladenmuseum - a whole museum dedicated to chocolate.

Driving and Parking in Cologne

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 25 to rent a car in Cologne, or over 21 if paying an age differential charge. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Cologne, take a look at our page about renting a car in Germany.

Driving in Cologne and around Germany has similar rules to the rest of mainland Europe (driving on the right and passing on the left, for instance) and drivers should be aware that ignoring the rules of the road can carry severe penalties. Cologne, just like several other German cities, requires vehicles within the city to carry a Low Emissions sticker. This will be provided on any Hertz vehicle rented in Germany, but you should double check your sticker is in place before driving.

Parking in Cologne is very simple, although spaces will be harder to find during busy periods. Chargeable on-street parking can be found around the city centre, with rates applying from 8am to 11pm, seven days a week. Rates are generally very reasonable, starting from around €2 per hour. There are also plenty of public car parks around the city, as well as Park + Ride services on the outskirts, which are deal if you prefer to walk around the city centre.

Driving in and around Cologne

Key Routes

Cologne’s roads are simple to navigate, thanks to a simple system of ring roads that take you toa various points within the citycentre, but also connect with the Autobahn network.Hanasring will get you anywhere you need to go in the citycentre or, if you fancy a more scenic drive along the Rhine then Am Leystapel is a busy road, but one with a great view.

Major Highways

You’ll find yourself well-served by the Autobahn for car rental in Cologne, with A1, A4 and A57 all starting in or cutting through the city. These connect with the wider Autobahn network, allowing you to drive almost anywhere in Germany - ideal for visiting the likes of Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Hannover. Contrary to popular belief, there are some speed limits on the Autobahn, with around half of them having posted speed limits and some have variable limits. This means you should keep an eye out for local signage to ensure you do not break the law.
