Hertz in Hamburg Airport (HAM)

Hamburg Airport is the fifth busiest in Germany, serving over 120 domestic and international destinations, offering long-haul flights to destinations as far flung as the Caribbean, Dubai and Tehran. Also known as Flughafen Hamburg Airport, this important European hub has two terminals and covers 5.7sq. km. Hamburg Airport is located just 5km from the city centre, making it well placed for exploring Germany’s second largest city.

Northern Germany is a dream to drive around, whether you’re exploring one of the region’s big cities, such as Hamburg or Hannover, or you’re looking for something a little more serene, such as Mecklenburg Lake District or Rügen Island, a favourite holiday spot for Germans. Pick up your hire car without any fuss from the Hertz Car Rental branch, conveniently located in the airport, and start your adventure as soon as your plane lands.

About the airport

Hamburg Airport is the oldest airport still in operation, once used for airship flights today it’s an important international and domestic transport hub served by around 65 airlines, including Emirates, Ryanair and United Airlines.

Hamburg Airport, known in German as Flughafen Hamburg Airport, consists of two terminals, with most airlines operating from Terminal 1. Terminal 2 is home to a number of airlines, including Germanwings and Star Alliance. Both terminals have all the retail space and facilities you would expect from a large transport hub, as well as good transport links to the city.

How to rent a car at Hamburg Airport

Hertz has a car rental branch located right in Terminal 2, which means you can hire a vehicle as soon as your touch down. The Hertz Car Rental branch is open Monday to Saturday between the hours of 0700-2300, and Sunday between the hours of 0800-2300. Vehicles are picked up and returned from the rental car park, opposite the P5 multi-story car park.

You must be at least 25 years of age to rent a car in Germany, although this can be reduced to 21 for some vehicle types by paying a supplementary charge. You must also have a full and valid driver’s licence that you have held for at least one year. All non-EU licences that are not in Roman script require an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well as the licence itself.

Driving in Germany

Visitors to Germany are only allowed to drive hire vehicles with the appropriate insurance and a full license. More information on driving in the Germany is available here.
