Hertz in Athens

Travel around Greece’s capital in comfort and style with Hertz Car Rental in Athens. With plenty of branches in and around the city, Hertz ensures that you’re most comfortable during your stay — especially if you plan on travelling outside of Athens to neighboring towns, cities and landmarks.

Athens is considered to be the birthplace of Western civilization and, as such is a city rich in history and culture with many world renowned sights to see such as the Acropolis and Ancient Agora. As it is such a sprawling city, a car rental in Athens is somewhat essential if you plan to get round as many of the sights as you can while keeping out of the heat.

Driving and Parking in Athens

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 21 to rent a car in Athens. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Athens, take a look at our page about renting a car in Greece.

As the centre of Athens can become very congested during busy periods, it can be advisable to park up in the city and visit some of the attractions on foot. In addition to private car parks, there are nearly 2,000 municipal parking spaces for short-term visitors around the city and you must pay to use these between 9am and 9pm Monday to Friday, and between 9am and 4pm on Saturdays. These spaces can be used for a maximum of three hours and their rates are:

• 50 cents for 30 minutes, and a further 50 cents for every additional 30 minutes, up to two hours.
• €2 flat rate for two hours.
• €4 flat rate for two-and-a-half hours.
• €6 flat rate for three hours.

If you rent a car in Athens, you should be aware that coloured parking spaces are reserved for locals and permit holders only, and parking is forbidden when a market is to be held on the street that day.

Driving in and around Athens

Key Routes

When you rent a car in Athens, it’s worthwhile getting to know some of the major routes in the city. Although no motorways run through the centre of the city, several national roads do, connecting the city to the motorway system and giving faster access to different areas of Athens.

Highways 1, 8, 54, 56, 83 and 91 all run through the city, forming a sort of ring road around its centre, circling the Acropolis - with Highway 91, in particular, offering some tantalising glimpses of the famous monument.

Major Highways

Athens is well connected to the rest of Greece by motorway, with the E75 taking you north and the E94 taking you west. Several major routes in Greece carry tolls although, as the companies managing them vary, so do the fees and payment methods. So, when you rent a car in Athens, be sure to check tolls before you travel. Other key points to be aware of when driving in Greece are:

• You drive on the right and overtake on the left.
• Your car horn should only be used in built-up areas in order to avoid an accident.
• Seat belts are compulsory.
• An appropriate car seat is mandatory for children under 12 measuring under 1.35m. These can be rented at an additional fee from your Hertz branch.
• Speed limits are generally 130 km/h on motorways, 110 km/h on out-of-town roads and 50 km/h in built up areas. Always pay attention to local signage on speed limits.
• Drink driving laws are strictly enforced with a legal limit of 0.05%, and a lower limit of 0.02% for drivers who’ve had their licence for less than two years.
