Hertz in Budapest International Airport (BUD)

Budapest International Airport serves the capital and is the biggest of Hungary’s four airports. 2015 saw over 10 million passengers pass through its three terminals, and that figure continues to escalate as tourism from other parts of Europe and farther afield continues to grow. Located 16km to the southeast of Budapest, it is very convenient for driving in to the historic Hungarian capital by Hertz car to explore the many attractions on offer both there and in the surrounding region.

Founded almost a century ago, Hertz Car Rental continues to lead the way in supplying customers with rental vehicles around the globe. Its tailor-made services suit ongoing travel arrangements of every kind, providing customers arriving at Budapest International Airport with a comfortable and convenient self-drive option for their trip. The Hertz Car Rental branch at Budapest International Airport can be found in Terminal 2, close to the arrivals lounge.

About the airport

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, to give it its official title, dates from 1939 but the present building was provided with a new infrastructure in 1980 to cope with steadily increasing demand. When the national carrier Malev Airlines collapsed in 2012 low-cost carriers moved in, as well as the likes of Lufthansa and Aegean Airlines, and today the airport is a state-of-the-art gateway and hub for the whole of Central Europe.

Terminal 1, 2A and 2B are the main buildings at the airport, with Schengen flights serviced by 2A and non-Schengen by 2B. The main shopping and dining outlets and venues are to be found in a state-of-the-art facility between Terminals 2A and 2B, and you’ll also find the Hertz Car Rental desk close to arrivals in the 2A area. 2A and 2B are connected by a walkway.

How to rent a car at Budapest International Airport

The Hertz Car Rental branch is open Monday to Sunday from 8.00am until midnight. If you wish to arrange an out-of-hours pick-up or drop-off you can do so offline through the Reservation Centre.

You must be aged at least 25 to rent a car from hertz at Budapest International Airport. However, this goes down to 21 on payment of a young driver surcharge of €12.7. Ages of 25 and 30 years are also requirements for certain classes of vehicle. You must have either a valid driving licence or, if you are coming from outside of the EU, an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a vehicle. You’ll also need to show a valid passport or, from within the EU, a valid ID. The staff will also need to see your documentation for pre-bookings, and you may pay by debit and credit card.

Additional information:

• If you do not wish to drive yourself, or are unable to drive yourself, then Hertz offers a convenient Chauffeur-Drive service to its customers.
• Several models of vehicle are fitted with navigation systems which make it easier to get around the busy Budapest roads and those in the surrounding area.

Driving in Hungary

Visitors to Hungary are only allowed to drive hire vehicles with the appropriate insurance and a full licence. More information on driving in Hungary is available here.

Nearby attractions

Hungary has an excellent road network, well signed and maintained, connecting Budapest with every other part of the country on a system of motorways and secondary roads. In Budapest, you’ll be able to easily get around and explore the attractions such as the famous Chain Bridge connecting Buda with Pest, St Stephen’s Basilica, Fisherman’s Bastion and Buda Castle. The Czechenyi Thermal Baths are another great favourite with visitors, and there’s plenty of convenient parking in and around the city centre.
