Hertz in Keflavik Airport (KEF)

You’ll find Keflavik Airport just over three kilometres from Keflavik and 50km from the historic city of Reykjavik. It is Iceland’s biggest airport, as well as being the main hub for the country’s international departures and arrivals. Hertz has a branch available for car rental in Keflavik International Airport, allowing you to take control of your travel plans from the moment you step off the plane.

The world’s leading provider of quality rental vehicles, Hertz Car Rental has over 7,700 branches operating in 145 countries across the globe. Having been at the forefront of the industry for more almost 100 years, Hertz has helped millions of tourists and businessmen travel in comfort and style. Customers arriving at the Keflavik Airport branch of Hertz Car Rental can choose from a wide variety of vehicles to suit their needs.

About the Airport

Keflavik International Airport was originally built during the Second World War by the US military and was known as ‘Meeks Field Airport’. Once the war was over, it was given over to Icelandic control and renamed after the nearby town of Keflavik. However, as part of a defense treaty, the US military returned to the airport during the 1950s. Protests against military presence during the 1960s and ‘70s failed to change the airport’s dual purpose. However, in 2006, the US withdrew its troops and Keflavik Airport became used for commercial flights only.

Today, the airport has three runways and is used almost entirely for international flights. It takes care of almost 7million passengers each year, acting as a gateway to Iceland for those travelling for either business or pleasure. The Keflavik Airport branch of Hertz Car Rental is located just a short walk from the Arrivals lounge, in the terminal building.

How to rent a car at Keflavik Airport (KEF)

The Hertz Car Rental branch at Keflavik Airport is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing you to rent or return a vehicle at the time that suits you. Hertz also offers a One Way service, which allows you to drop off your vehicle at any of their branches in Iceland; ideal if you’re planning on travelling from one airport to another.

You must beat least 20 years old to rent a car in Keflavik Airport. However, this only applies to passenger cars; for four-wheel-drives and minibuses you must be over 23. The only documentation you’ll require is your driving licence (which you must have held for at least one year) and a credit card. To prevent any confusion, it’s recommended that you bring your Hertz Car Rental reservations confirmation with you. If you’re coming from a country where your passport isn’t written in Roman script, you’ll also need an International Driving Licence (IDL) or and International Driving Permit (IDP).

Additional Information

• Hertz Rental cars are supplied with a full tank of petrol.
• It’s possible to add extra drivers to your agreement, for a small surcharge per driver.

Nearby Attractions

Iceland’s roads are well maintained and the signage is excellent. This is particularly important when driving in the long and often harsh winters, when extra care needs to be taken and visibility can be impaired. Use the extensive road network to explore the country around Keflavik, and the town itself is full of attractions.

Families will enjoy a trip back into Iceland’s past, with a visit to the Viking World museum, while those with an interest in music should set aside some time for a visit to the Icelandic Museum of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The Keflavik Maritime Centre will appeal to anyone with even a passing interest in all things nautical
