Rules and regulations for driving in Ireland

In Ireland, like the UK they drive on the left and overtake on the right. All cars are right-hand drive. There are historical sights, stunning landscapes and plenty of outdoor pursuits to discover in Ireland, many of which can only be reached down narrow, rural roads, so take your time. Below are a few rules and regulations that are important when driving in Ireland.

• Speed limits are: Motorways 120km/h, National roads 100km/h, Regional roads 80 km/h, Urban areas 50km/h, Special limits (schools etc.) 30km/h
• Drink driving is a very serious offence in Ireland. You must have less than 50mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. However, new drivers must have less than 20mg/ml
• Seat belts must be worn by everyone in the car
• Children under 12 must be correctly restrained in a car or booster seat
• As with nearly all European countries, it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving, although hands-free kits are available
• On rural roads you may need to slow down for farm animals and tractors
• Parking on the street in towns requires a street disc, this can be bought in many retailers. Alternatively park in a multi-storey car park.
• The Dublin M50 motorway operates a no barrier toll. All Hertz vehicles have been registered with the Toll Operator and you will be automatically charged at the end of your rental. The standard charge is €3.10 per usage. Other tolls accept cash
• Parking in cities is controlled. If you park illegally you may get clamped or impounded. Look for signs that inform you of the restrictions in the area.
• It is illegal to have radar detection in your car, so you'll have to turn your satnav or GPS points of interest function off and stick to an old-fashioned map!

Driving in and around Ireland

Special attractions

Coastal roads, mountain passes, and Palladian mansions, the Kildare Wicklow Grand Tour is a relaxing and enjoyable drive. There are hundreds of gardens, ancient monuments and fantastic golf courses and equestrian clubs along the way. If you are after something more wild then travel from Donegal to Cork and take in the breath-taking sights of the Atlantic Way.

Head to the capital, Dublin and visit some ghosts at Kilmainham Gaol, famous for its political prisoners. Leave the car and take a visit to the Guinness Storehouse. Home of the 'Black Stuff', it is located in the heart of the St. James’s Gate Brewery. See the world’s largest pint glass and learn about Ireland’s rich history. End your tour with a pint of perfection in the rooftop Gravity Bar!

Head south to Blarney Castel and Gardens in Cork. Thousands of people flock here every year to kiss the Blarney Stone. Legend has it that the person who kisses the limestone rock gets the “gift of the gab”.
