Hertz in Bologna

With plenty of Hertz branches available offering great value car rental in Bologna, it’s easy to take control of how and when you see the sights in this spectacular city. While ‘La Dotta’, as Bologna is locally known, has an efficient bus system, choosing to rent a car in Bologna allows you to plan your own timetable and avoid overcrowded public transport. Getting around by car is, without a doubt, the best way to explore Bologna, especially as this busy destination has an excellent road network serving practically every part of the city.

Packed with historical buildings and outstanding shopping areas, there’s plenty to see and do. Whether you choose to visit the square of Piazza Maggiore with its cafés, the Gothic spires of San Petronio Basilica or one of the many bustling food markets, car rental in Bologna allows you to see what you want to see, when you want to see it.

Driving and Parking in Bologna

To rent a car in Bologna you must be at least 18 years old and have a full UK driving license, which you must have held for the minimum of one year. In addition, you’ll need a credit card with your name on it. An International Driving Permit isn’t mandatory, but it is advisable to carry one. For more information about driving regulations in Bologna, take a look at our page about renting a car in Italy.

The car is king in Bologna and as a result, the morning and evening rush hours are fairly significant. When you’re planning your days out, it’s best not to travel between 07.00am and 09.00am, and 4.00pm to 6.00pm, as the queues can add substantially to your journey time.

However, when the rush hours have passed, you’ll find driving around the city is easy and there are plenty of places to park. The center of Bologna is home to a host of historic buildings and is designates as a traffic-free zone. Look out for the ‘ZTL’ signs. This means ‘Zona Traffico Limitato’ – which translates as ‘limited traffic area’. You won’t be able to park here and these zones are in operation 24 hours a day. However, the center is encircled with traffic meters and car parks, all of which are just a short walk from all the major attractions and amenities.

Driving and around Bologna

Key Routes

When you rent a car in Bologna, you’ll quickly discover that getting around is much easier than you might think. In addition to a ring of parking meters, the centre is also encircled by a ring road (comprising of SS64 and SS9), served by smaller roads which will take you to any non-pedestrianised areas you might want to visit.

The ring road also radiates routes to some of the major highways, which will take you further afield.

Major Highways

Bologna almost acts as a hub for five major intersections, giving you access to astonishing inland scenery or the glorious beaches on the east coast. For a truly scenic drive, the E35 highway to Florence is stunning. Along the way you’ll find the best of Tuscan scenery, from perfumed olive groves to lush, green hills. There are also some chocolate-box-pretty towns to visit along the way, such as Bruscoli and Montefredente.

However, if you want to soak up the sunshine on a beautiful beach, follow the E45 highway and jump on the A14 road towards Ravenna. After around an hour and twenty minutes you should find yourself in Punta de Marina, which is a stunning seaside town with entertainment on tap. If you’re renting a car in Bologna for the family, then pay a visit to the Play Park 3000 for some watery rides and slides. However, if it’s just the two of you then head for Baloo Beach.

Driving in and around Bologna isn’t hard – just remember the golden rule of driving on the right and overtaking on the left.
