Hertz in Florence Airport

Formerly known as Amerigo Vespucci Airport, Florence Airport, also called Peretola Airport, lies just 2.5 miles north-west of the city of Florence and is one of Tuscany’s major airports. In fact, it’s the second-busiest airport in Tuscany after Pisa International Airport. Connected by bus to the central railway station and with excellent connections by road, the airport is convenient for those wishing to rent a car with Hertz to explore all the Tuscan countryside has to offer.

Hertz vehicles are known for their reliability and they have been providing customers with high-quality rental vehicles for almost a century. Customers arriving at the Florence Airport branch of Hertz Car Rental can choose from a wide selection of rental vehicles so that they can explore the area at their leisure, without relying on public transport.

About the airport

There has been an airfield on the site here since 1910, but Florence Airport opened in the 1930s, with the first passenger flights taking place in the 1940s. Upgrades to the airport took place in the 1980s and in 1990 it was renamed Amerigo Vespucci Airport after the Italian cartographer and merchant. Further renovation and expansion took place in 1999 and in 2012, Vueling, the low-cost Spanish airline, opened a new base of operations in Florence.

There is a single terminal building at Florence Airport with just one runway. Plans are currently underway to create a second line of light rail to connect the airport to the city centre, with a terminal at the airport.

How to rent a car at Florence Airport

The Hertz Car Rental branch at Florence Airport is located on Via Palagio degli Spini, just 500 metres from the terminal building. A regular shuttle bus runs from the stop outside the main terminal to the rental centre. The branch is open from Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 11.30pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 11.30pm. Hertz also provides an out-of-hours drop-off service which can be arranged offline through the Reservation Centre

You must be at least 25 or 30 years of age to rent a vehicle with Hertz in Florence, depending on the class of vehicle. The minimum age of 25 can be reduced to 23 for specific classes of vehicle only on payment of a young driver surcharge.

You must present a valid licence held for at least one year. Italian citizens holding the new European driving licence must also show a valid national identity card. If your licence is not in Roman script, you will require an International Driver’s Permit (IDP). An IDP is mandatory for all non-EU renters, except for customers from the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA.

Where customers have arranged advance collection, the relevant documentation will be required, and all payments can be made using a credit or debit card.

Additional information:

• Built-in navigation is available in specific vehicles only. A Hertz NeverLost portable navigation system can be rented for an extra charge.
• Child, infant and booster seats are available upon request at this branch.
• It’s possible to hire ski-equipped rental vehicles with snow chains.
• Hertz Gold Plus Rewards members can skip queues and paperwork and go straight to their rental car.

Driving in Italy

Nearby attractions

Hertz car rental in Florence is the best way to see everything Tuscany has to offer – but watch out for the ‘ZTL’ zone in Florence city centre, where non-residents are not allowed to drive. While you’re here, you must check out the world-famous Duomo with its iconic terracotta roof, the Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi Gallery (home of Michelangelo’s David) and La Specola (the natural history museum). It’s also worth taking a day trip to Prato to see the beautiful frescos in the Duomo.
