Hertz in Naples

Car rental in Naples is extremely easy, thanks to more than 10 Hertz branches in convenient locations around the city, including airports, railway stations and at the harbour.

Naples is a very old city and its historic nature has earned it UNESCO World Heritage Site status, with no less than 448 monumental and historic churches — the highest number in the world for any single city. There is plenty to do for culture lovers, with a huge number of museums and galleries within the city centre. Sports fans needn’t feel left out, as they can visit Stadio San Paolo, home to the famous football team, Napoli.

Driving and Parking in Naples

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 25 to rent a car in Naples, or over 23 if paying an age differential charge. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Naples, take a look at our page about renting a car in the Italy.

If you do decide to drive in Naples city centre, take care. Traffic is usually heavy, especially at peak hours. Ensure you stay attentive and following Italy’s driving regulations at all time. Otherwise, driving in Naples, or Italy is similar to driving elsewhere on mainland Europe. Be aware that the Italians do have some strict rules regarding overtaking, including prohibiting the act at or on the approach to level crossings, at bends, at intersections, on the brow of a hill and anywhere visibility is limited.

Parking can be challenging as there are limited spaces in the city centre. If you are driving into the city centre, it’s recommended you use car parks on the outskirts of the city and then continue your journey into the centre on public transport or by taxi. If you do park in the city centre, be sure to ignore unofficial “parking attendants” who may ask for money to “protect” your vehicle. It’s a common scam and could cost you a lot of money.

Driving in and around Naples

Key Routes

If you do choose to drive around Naples, the SS18 takes you along picturesque city streets, with glimpses of the Gulf of Naples. This also helps you access the aptly named Via Panoramica, which connects with a series of other roads and takes you on a stunning journey around the base of Mount Vesuvius. Local Autostrada, A56, also helps you bypass some of the busiest of the city streets, helping you get to much more beautiful locations, such as the Via Napoli coastal road.

Major Highways

Naples is served well by Italy’s Autostrada network, allowing you to explore more of the country via the A1, A3 and A16. The A1 connects Naples to Milan, via Rome, while the A3 runs to Salerno in the south. The A16 runs coast to coast, letting you explore the beaches of the Adriatic. The Autostrada network means that car rental in Naples is the best way to travel, should you want to see more of the ancient country’s gorgeous cities and countryside.
