About the airport

Constructed in 1983 to meet the growing needs of domestic and international travelers at the time, Amman International Airport has grown to become the main gateway for the kingdom, and a stopover for many Middle East airlines flying to other destinations.

The leading architectural firm of Foster & Partners designed the new terminal, which has a roof made of 127 separate concrete domes and was inspired by the appearance of traditional Bedouin tents. There are three lounges in the terminal, and retail space has greatly increased to cover over 6,000 sq metres. It is home to a number of international cafés, restaurants and designer outlets, and also has a large Duty Free area.

Nearby attractions

Visitors and citizens tend to rely on their cars for getting about in Amman, and as the roads are generally maintained to a high standard this is no problem. The use of indicators is often ignored, and street signs are not always accurate, so it’s advisable to use GPS or equip yourself with an up-to-date road map of the city or area you’re driving in. However, it’s pretty easy to locate attractions such as the Roman Theatre, Royal Automobile Museum and Amman Citadel by simply asking for directions, as the residents are very friendly and happy to help.
