Hertz in Shuwaikh

Renting a car in Kuwait City is the best way to get around this impressive capital at your own pace. With an extensive and well-maintained road system that’s constantly being improved, Kuwait City is easy to navigate with most road signs in both English and Arabic. Rent a car in Shuwaikh with Hertz Car Rental and you can explore this fascinating destination at your own pace, and in the latest air-conditioned luxury cars.

It’s easy to find our Kuwait City branch as it’s right in the heart of the city, near the waterfront and the Grand Mosque, in the Shuwaikh block. Once you’ve picked up your rental car, you’ll be in the perfect spot to start your Kuwait City explorations. Just a short drive from the Grand Mosque is the Seif Palace with its beautiful watchtower, as well as the Al-Mubarakiya souk, a traditional Kuwait market.

With clearly marked signs and a grid-pattern road system, you can drive to each of Kuwait City’s attractions easily. See amazing architecture, visit galleries, theatres, and museums, and drive along the waterfront to see yachts in the Gulf and the impressive backdrop of Kuwait City’s skyscrapers.

Rules and Regulations for Driving in Kuwait City

Kuwait has a modern and extensive road system and travelling by car is the most popular way to get around. The capital city has well-built roads that are usually easy to navigate and are in a general grid pattern. Driving a rental car in Kuwait City isn’t too dissimilar from many Western European countries, and you’ll be driving on the right.

While those with a Visit Visa can drive in Kuwait with a valid UK driving licence, you may also need an International Driving Licence. Rules and regulations can change, so be sure to check before you go.

To rent a car in Kuwait City, and Kuwait as a whole, you must be at least 21 or 25 years old, depending on the type of vehicle you wish to hire. You can check with our Hertz branch in Shuwaikh for the most-up-to-date requirements, but you will likely need a copy of your passport, your national driving licence, a copy of your Visit/Business Visa, and an International Driving Permit. This permit contains translations of your national driving licence. You will also need to show your passport when you come to collect your hire car.

Driving in Kuwait City is fairly straightforward, but the roads can get congested during the day, particularly at peak times. The traffic police are very strict, and you should be aware of the speed limits at all times. Generally, the speed limit on motorways is 70mph (120kph) and on smaller, urban roads, 28mph (45kph).

Traffic can get very busy and a little hectic with drivers switching lanes unexpectedly. This is all part of the adventure of Kuwait, so it’s best to stay alert to some challenging driving conditions, especially during the rush hours. Just like many countries, wearing your seatbelt is mandatory, and using a mobile phone is illegal, unless it’s a hands-free system.

Visit the vast Al Shaheed Park with its fountains, sculptures, restaurants, and palm trees, all with an unbeatable view of the city’s skyline. Don’t miss the Kuwait Towers either, in downtown Kuwait City. These iconic towers are stunning to look at, and you can even go inside for fantastic views of the city and the sea or stay longer to enjoy a meal in the Tower’s exclusive restaurant.
