Rules and Regulations for Driving in Shuwaikh

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 25 to rent a car with Hertz in Shuwaikh. For certain vehicle groups the lower age limit is 21. When collecting your vehicle, you will need to present a copy of your passport, driving licence, and a visitor or business visa. In Kuwait, international driving permits (IDP) are only accepted if accompanied by your national driving licence.

This is a fast-paced and modern city, which means driving really is the best way to get around Kuwait City. You will find free or paid parking at many hotels and malls but for exploring the city on foot, the best parking in the city centre can be found at Al-Souq underground parking lot. Parking against black and yellow blocks painted on the kerb is illegal in Kuwait. The area surrounding Fourth Ring Road should be avoided on Thursdays and Fridays, as the Souq-Al-Juma market takes place on these days.

Driving in Kuwait City is on the right, and strict speed limits are in place in most parts of the city and surrounding areas.

The Shuwaikh district is home to Kuwait University and you’ll find a number of car dealerships here. This is the city’s manufacturing district, and from Thursday afternoons to Friday evenings the area surrounding Al-Rai Place is turned into a lively market selling everything from clothes and accessories to antiques, furniture and souvenirs.

A little further down the road lies Shuwaikh Port, where you can see pre-Gulf war era dhows and battleships close to the shoreline. It’s just a short drive to the city centre malls and attractions such as Kuwait Towers and the Grand Mosque.

Minimum car rental age: Depending on the vehicle group, you must be either 21 or 25 years of age to rent a car in Kuwait City. There is no young driver surcharge to reduce this.

Correct side of the road: In Kuwait City, you drive on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left.

Speed limits: Speed limits in Kuwait City can vary considerably. On most urban roads, a speed limit of 45km/h applies, whilst on major highways it is generally 120km/h. The speed limit may be lower in particularly busy or built-up areas.

Driving with children: Child seats are not mandatory in Kuwait, but they are highly recommended. Children in the rear passenger seats must always use appropriate car seats and seat belts.

Toll roads: There are no toll roads in Kuwait. If travelling further afield, all Hertz vehicles are fitted with a Salik tag which will register each time you use a toll road. On returning your vehicle, you will be given a breakdown of this and be charged accordingly.
