Hertz in Amsterdam

Hertz car rental in Amsterdam is incredibly easy thanks to several convenient branch locations around the city. With lots to do and see — and with fantastic road access to other parts of the Netherlands - it makes sense to rent a car in Amsterdam, giving you complete flexibility.

One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Amsterdam is known for its criss-crossing canals, charming tulips and easy-going approach to life. The city is also a great base for travelling to other areas of the Netherlands thanks to a brilliant, easy-to-navigate network of motorways (Autosnelweg) and expressways (Autowegen) radiating out from the capital.

Driving and Parking in Amsterdam

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 21 to rent a car in Amsterdam. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in (city), take a look at our page about renting a car in the Netherlands.

If you do rent a car in Amsterdam, driving through the city centre — particularly the historic centre — is not generally advised as the narrow, winding streets, huge number of cyclists and public transport make it a difficult experience. If you are driving into the city from the outskirts, it is advised to use one of the excellent Park and Ride facilities where you can park for up to 24 hours for between €1 and €8 if you then travel into the city centre zone within one hour of parking.

If you do choose to drive in Amsterdam, you need to remember that trams have right of way and that you will come across more cyclists and pedestrians than you may in other major cities. City centre parking can be tricky, with limited spaces, although the Integrated Dynamic Parking system signs around the city will guide you to available spaces in the larger car parks. On-street parking is marked by blue light boxes with a white ‘P’. Hourly rates range from around €1.40 to €5 depending on the neighbourhood.

Driving in and around Amsterdam

Key Routes

The main ring road around Amsterdam is the A10, off which you will find many of the Park and Ride facilities. Most of the major motorways and expressways leading into Amsterdam connect to the A10, giving you easy access to the city.

Throughout Amsterdam there are many arterial routes known as Stadsroutes, which are labelled with an ’S’, such as the S100. Views across the canals can be seen from many of these routes and you will cross many of Amsterdam’s iconic bridges.

Major Highways

If you rent a car in Amsterdam to drive out of the city, you will come across two major road types.

The Autosnelweg is usually signposted with an ‘A’ and up to three digits (e.g., A10). Although the national speed limit has been 130km/h or 80mph for a number of years now, many roads still have a speed limit of 120km/h or 75mph so you should make sure you are aware of your speed. During peak time, you will find that the hard shoulder is opened as a lane to ease congestion and you should also look out for Autosnelwegs that split traffic by local and regional traffic in order to prevent crossing from lane to lane. If you find yourself in the wrong section of the split, you may find yourself unable to turn off!

The Autoweg, on the other hand, is usually signposted with an ’N’ and up to three digits. These expressways vary between dual carriageways with hard shoulders and single carriageway roads. There is a general speed limit of 100km/h or 60mph, but you should make sure you pay attention to local signage.
