Hertz in Amsterdam Airport Schipol (AMS)

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the fifth busiest airport in Europe, serving over 320 international and domestic destinations. The airport connects over 58 million passengers annually and it is the main airport for the Netherlands. Located just 9km of Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport is well placed for a visit to this popular European capital – or a road trip across the country.

Amsterdam might be famous for its bicycles, however, if you want to head out of the city to enjoy the charming countryside a rental car is the best way to. It’s very easy to hit the road as soon as you land at Schiphol, with a Hertz Car Rental branch conveniently located just behind Arrivals 3.

About the airport

With a history dating back to 1916, Schiphol Airport is today a major European transport hub. More than 90 airlines operate at Schiphol, which is a headquarters for airlines such as Delta, Jet Airways, and KLM. Schiphol Airport currently covers an area of more than 6,800 acres with further expansions to begin in 2017.

Although one of the largest airports in the world, Schiphol has a single terminal, which includes three departure halls. The airport promotes itself as a world of its own and boasts extensive facilities, including a shopping plaza, food outlets and everything you would expect from a large European airport.

How to rent a car at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Renting a car at Schiphol is easy, with a branch of Hertz Car Rental located right at the airport, (open between the hours of 6am to 1130pm, Monday to Sunday). Just head to the Hertz Sales and Service Desk, which is at Schiphol Plaza, directly behind Arrivals 3.

You must be at least 25 years of age to rent a car in Netherlands, which can be lowered to 23 for some vehicle types by paying a young driver’s surcharge. You must have a valid license that you’ve held for at least one year. All valid EU licenses are accepted. All Non-European Union driver's licenses are accepted in Roman Script, for driver's licenses in other scripts an International Driving Permit (IDP) is mandatory.

Nearby attractions

For families who love historic cars, motorcycles and other forms of transport, no visit to the Netherlands is complete without a stop-off at Louwman Museum. With over 200 classic and vintage cars, the Louwman Museum is the world’s largest private collection. The museum is located in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, The Hague, which is roughly a 35-minute drive from Schiphol Airport.

Of course, you’ll also want to visit Amsterdam, one of Europe’s most picturesque capital cities. Once you’ve reached the city, which is about 9km from the airport, it’s a good idea to park up and explore on foot or by bicycle, taking in such fascinating landmarks as the Rijksmuseum and the charming canal system.
