Hertz in Lisbon

Renting a car in Lisbon enables you to see the attractions of this beautiful city and explore the surrounding areas in total comfort. Whether you’re touring the coast, visiting the national parks or exploring the traditional small towns and villages, Hertz car rental in Lisbon makes seeing the Portuguese capital easy, with many branches at the airport and within the city itself.

Lisbon is known for its beautiful architecture, vibrant cultural scene and gorgeous outdoor spaces, as well as its proximity to some of the best resorts Portugal has to offer, with the likes of Lagos and Albufeira only a couple of hours away. With astounding drives along the Atlantic coast, Lisbon really is an area to explore by car.

Driving and Parking in Lisbon

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 25 to rent a car in Lisbon, or over 21 upon payment of a young driver surcharge. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Lisbon, take a look at our page about renting a car in Portugal.

Driving in central Lisbon can sometimes be challenging with narrow, winding streets that become quickly congested. However, having a car is still advisable if you are exploring the wider area, so if you want to spend days discovering the delights of the city centre, you should park up in one of the larger car parks and travel around the sights on foot.

Parking spaces in Lisbon are notoriously difficult to find, so you are best off looking for one of the many underground multi storey car parks rather than relying on on-street parking when you rent a car in Lisbon. Parking rates and regulations vary depending on where in the city you are and which type of parking you opt for, so be sure to check local signage when you park.

Driving in and around Lisbon

Key Routes

One of the most key routes when you rent a car in Lisbon is Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, which runs right along Lisbon’s coast and provides drivers with stunning Atlantic views as they travel. It connects at various points with other main roads taking you up through the city, as well as junctions with motorways and expressways such as the A36 and IP7.

Avenida Mal Gomes da Costa and Avenida Almirante Gago Courtinho are also vital routes, as they are the main roads to connect Lisbon with the airport.

Major Highways

Lisbon is well connected to the rest of Portugal by a series of autoestrada and itinerários principais — the country’s motorways and main arterial roads. Some do have tolls which vary from place to place, but these can be paid using an electronic toll tag which can be hired from your Hertz branch for a small additional charge.

Other things to be aware of when driving your car rental in Lisbon or wider Portugal are:

• The Portuguese drive on the right and pass on the left.
• Seat belts are compulsory for drivers and all passengers.
• Portugal conforms to EU regulations on child safety seats.G
• Drink driving laws in Portugal are very strict and rigorously enforced, with the maximum limit being 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. This means even one drink can put you over the legal limit.
• Speeding laws are enforced through the use of unmarked police cars and radar traps. Limits are 50km/h in built up areas, 90km/h on rural roads and 120km/h on the autoestrada.
• Green lanes on motorways are only for drivers using automatic toll payment devices.
