Dammam Airport, also known as King Fahd International Airport, is the third main airport in Saudi Arabia, serving the Eastern Region of the country. The airport is a major hub for Saudia, the national carrier, and operates flights throughout the region and globally, for example to Dubai, Lahore, and Frankfurt. King Fahd International Airport is located roughly 20km from Dammam, or about an hour’s drive.
The best way to get around Dammam and the surrounding area has to be by hire car. With a Hertz Car Rental branch conveniently located at arrivals, you can hit the road as soon as you land – ideal whether you’re planning a road-trip across country on a dessert highway or heading into the cultural fascinating city of Dammam itself. Although first designed in the late 1970s, Dammam Airport wasn’t opened for commercial flights until 1999 and it is today Saudi Arabia’s third main hub after the airports at Jeddah and Riyadh. Consisting of two terminals, Terminal 1 for Saudia (Saudi Arabia’s national carrier) and Terminal 2 for foreign carriers, by sheer scale the airport is one of the largest in the world – larger than the country of Bahrain!
King Fahd International Airport boasts extensive retail space, restaurants, cafeterias and lounges and was one of the first airports in Saudi Arabia to adopt Duty Free stores. There are a number of hotels within driving distance of the Dammam Airport, with the construction of dedicated airport hotel currently underway.
Renting a car at Dammam Airport is relatively straightforward, with a branch of Hertz Car Rental conveniently located in the arrivals area. The rental car parking area is located just outside the airport, next to the main car parks.
By law, women aren’t allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia. To hire a car, you must be at least 23 years of age for all vehicle groups and have been in possession of a valid licence for at least one year. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is required for anyone living outside of Saudi Arabia. The person named on the reservation booking must be the main driver, present at time of rental and payer of any rental charges.
Visitors to the Saudi Arabia are only allowed to drive hire vehicles with the appropriate insurance and licence. More information on driving in Saudi Arabia is available here.
Dammam is one of the oldest inhabited places in the world, and with its beautiful beaches, quaint villages and fascinating cultural and historical landmarks, there’s plenty to see and discover if you’re planning a road-trip across the region. Why not take a drive down Al Khaleej highway, to King Fahd Park, one of the largest parks in the country, where you’ll find restaurants, rides and two large artificial lakes.
Because Dammam’s heritage stretches back so far, its museums are well stocked with fascinating ancient treasures. At Dammam Regional Museum you can explore collections dating back to the Stone Age, charting the pre-Islamic and Islamic history of the Eastern Saudi Arabia. Wherever you adventure takes you, hiring Hertz rental car as soon as you reach the airport has to be the most convenient way to get around.
