Rules and Regulations for Driving in Dammam

Cars are very popular in Saudi Arabia and fuel is very cheap. The roads can get busy, but are well maintained with an extensive network of urban roads and motorways. Dammam isn’t too difficult to navigate, with its grid-like roads and reasonably clear signage.

You must be at least 23 years old to hire a car with us in Dammam and have held your driving licence for a year. You’ll also need an International Driving Permit, which translates your national driving licence into other languages.

Speed limits are strictly enforced, and the government has introduced speed cameras. In general, speed limits are 70mph (120kph) on motorways and 28mph (45kph) on urban roads. Look out for speed limit signs though, as it can vary. While the locals may drive over the limit, don’t be tempted to join them and always remain aware of your speed. You can register your phone with the SAHER traffic management system and will get a text message if you’ve been caught speeding or fined for a traffic violation.

Like most countries, it’s mandatory to wear a seatbelt while driving in Dammam and the rest of Saudi Arabia. While there isn’t a law regarding child seats, you can hire them from our Hertz branch on King Saud Street and get peace of mind for your child’s safety.

Drink driving is banned in Saudi Arabia and punishment can be severe, as the Saudi authorities have a zero-tolerance approach. The use of mobile phones while driving is also banned unless you’re using your phone’s hands-free.
