Rules and Regulations for Driving in Jeddah

To drive in Jeddah, and in Saudi Arabia as a whole, you must have a national driving licence and an International Driving Permit. You must also be at least 21 years old and have held your driving licence for at least a year.

Speed limits vary in Saudi Arabia and fines are high if you’re caught speeding. Always keep a look out for speed limit signs and abide by them, even if you see locals going faster. The typical speed limit on motorways is 70mph (120kph) and 28mph (45kph) on urban roads. Limits can vary though, so stay aware.

You’ll drive on the right-hand side of the road in Jeddah and while the roads are usually in very good condition, navigation can be confusing. Some roads in Jeddah don’t have clearly marked names, and online mapping services like Google Maps aren’t completely accurate. Jeddah has many large roundabouts with incredible sculptures on them that you can’t miss, these also make good landmarks when asking for directions.

Jeddah roads tend to be very long and many lack intersections. This means that U-turns are a normal sight and are a legal way of getting to your destination. Jeddah’s roads can get congested with drivers switching lanes erratically, but you’ll soon get used to it and find your space in the flow.

The laws are changing with regards to who can drive in Saudi Arabia so it’s best to check rules and regulations before you travel. However, if you don’t fancy driving in Jeddah, or are unable to, you can use our Hertz chauffeur service and explore the city without having to drive yourself at all.

Stroll around Al-Balad and take in the exquisite architecture and design of this 7th century area. Visit the Al Alawi Souq in Al-Balad and see traditional Saudi markets at their finest.

Jeddah is well known for its huge quantity of impressive statues, sculptures, and monuments. As you drive around the city, you’ll discover them by chance but a trip down to the Corniche on the waterfront is a must. This 30km stretch of waterfront offers restaurants, beaches, sculptures and King Fahd’s Fountain, the tallest fountain in the world. It’s particularly amazing at night when powerful lights illuminate the water.
