Hertz in Cape Town Internatioanl Airport (CPT)

Cape Town international Airport is the second busiest airport in South Africa, after Johannesburg Airport. Around 24 airlines serve more than 100 domestic and international destinations, including London-Heathrow, Doha, and Amsterdam. The airport is located around 20km from the centre of Cape Town.

Cape Town and the surrounding region is a driver’s paradise. Overlooked by Table Mountain, Cape Town is close to some of the world’s most beautiful natural landscapes – just imagine driving alongside the ocean, across one of South Africa’s breathtaking ocean-side roads! Start your adventure without any fuss, when you hire a car from the Hertz Car Rental Branch conveniently located at the airport.

About the airport

Cape Town International Airport first opened in 1954, to replace the pre-existing Wingfield Aerodrome. Today, the airport handles more than eight million passengers annually and is a major gateway for South African tourism. The Cape Town to Johannesburg route is especially busy, connecting roughly four million passengers annually, roughly half of the number of passengers passing through the airport as a whole.

Although technically consisting of multiple terminals, Cape Town Airport operates as a single terminal, with the international and domestic terminals connected to a central terminal where check-ins take place. The airport has all the facilities, retail space and food outlets you would expect from a major transport hub. There are several hotels near to the airport, including Hotel Verde located just 400m away.

How to rent a car at Cape Town International Airport

Hiring a car at Cape Town International Airport is easy, with a branch of Hertz Car Rental situated adjacent to the terminal building. To reach the car hire offices, simply head out of the terminal building and under the underpass that separates the airport from the facility. If you are coming from the domestic terminal, turn right as you leave the airport and then go straight ahead under the pedestrian underpass.

To hire a car at Cape Town International Airport you must be at least 18 years of age. When renting in South Africa, all drivers with a UK licence (except Northern Ireland) will need to provide evidence of any driving endorsements. This also applies if you have a paper licence that was issued before 1998. If you do not have a valid national driver's licence in English, you will require an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Driving in South Africa

Visitors to the South Africa are only allowed to drive hire vehicles with the appropriate insurance and a full licence. More information on driving in South Africa is available here.

Nearby attractions

Located about an hour’s drive from Cape Town International Airport, Franschhoek Motor Museum is well worth a visit if you and your family can’t get enough of cars, motorbikes and everything in between. With a collection of cars dating back roughly 100 years, at Franschhoek Motor Museum you can explore the history automotive industry from the very beginning and feast your eyes on some iconic cars from brands like Alpha Romeo and Bugatti.

A car isn’t just a nice thing to look at, and hiring a car is a convenient way to see some of Cape Town’s most amazing attractions. A region famed for its natural beauty, why not take a trip to the exquisite beaches of Boulders Bay, a favourite haunt for now sadly endangered African penguins – yes you read that right, penguins in South Africa!
