Hertz in Durban Airport (DUR)

Durban Airport, also known as King Shaka International Airport, is located in KwaZulu-Natal, 35km to the north of Durban. It opened in 2010, and in 2015 almost 5 million passengers passed through its passenger terminal. It takes just half an hour or so to drive into central Durban from the airport, so it is ideally located for exploring this dynamic city and its many attractions with Hertz Car Rental.

Hertz Car Rental has been at the forefront of providing customers with rental vehicles for almost a century, facilitating their ongoing travel arrangements at a range of international locations. Customers arriving at the Durban Airport branch of Hertz Car Rental are able to quickly pick up their vehicle of choice and enjoy the comfort and style that self-drive in a city like Durban affords them.

About the airport

Construction of Durban Airport started in 1973, but the project ran into long-term problems and it wasn’t until 2004 that it was jump-started again. The first commercial flights began in 2010. There are various long-term plans for the airport’s future development and it is envisaged that by 2060 it will be able to handle 45 million passengers each year.

Located at the south end of the airport, the passenger terminal is divided into two levels, with arrivals on the lower floor and departures above. There are separate international and domestic security checks and five conveyor belts in baggage reclaim. The lower floor contains most of the retail outlets and there is also a piazza area just outside of the main building. Although there is no public viewing deck at the airport, there are various vantage points available with seating areas.

How to rent a car at Durban Airport

The Hertz Car Rental branch is open Monday to Friday from 5.00am to 10.30pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 6.00am to 10.30pm. After-hours drop-off and pick-up services are provided by Hertz to facilitate passengers’ ongoing travel arrangements.

You must be at least 18 years old to rent a Hertz car at Durban Airport, and this applies to all groups of vehicles. Customers from the UK excluding Northern Ireland need proof of any endorsements, and processing is faster if you bring a printout of your Licence Summary. If your licence is not in English you’ll also be required to have an International Driving Permit (IDP). Customers will also need a valid passport from their country of origin if they are not from South Africa. Payment can be made by debit and credit card, and paperwork must be provided if the vehicle was booked in advance.

Additional information:

• A Chauffeur-Drive service is provided by Hertz Car Rental. This has to be arranged directly through your Reservation Centre.
• The delivery and collection service is also not available online and must be arranged with the Reservation Centre.
• Some vehicles are fitted with a navigation system which allows customers to negotiate the streets of Durban more easily.

Driving in South Africa

Visitors to South Africa are allowed to drive hire vehicles with the appropriate insurance and a full licence. More information on driving in South Africa is available here.
