Hertz in Geneva

Geneva is a French-influenced global hub for finance and commerce. It lies at the southern tip of Lake Geneva, is within driving distance of Mont Blanc and is surrounded by the magnificent Jura mountains and the Alps. A Hertz car rental in Geneva lets you explore the city and the surrounding region with ease.

Geneva roads are often single lanes, with many traffic lights that are slow to change too. Swiss driving regulations forbid you from turning left at intersections, so make sure you plan ahead in order to avoid having to make large detours. It’s also highly advisable if you plan to drive around Geneva and beyond to take precautions against bad weather and difficult driving conditions. It is compulsory for vehicles to carry a red warning triangle and, in some conditions, snow chains are compulsory. With a bit of forward planning however and combining a Hertz car rental in Geneva with your trip is like a breath of fresh air: simple, liberating and affordable.

Driving and Parking in Geneva

You will need a full driving license and must be over 21 to rent a car in Geneva. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Geneva, take a look at our page about renting a car in Switzerland.

There are three main options when it comes to parking in Geneva: Underground parking garages are plentiful but expensive. They are located throughout the city and provide a convenient and safe spot to park your Hertz car rental in Geneva. On the outskirts of Geneva are Park and Ride garages, enabling you to park up before using public transport that takes you right into the centre of the city. Park and Ride parking currently costs CHF1/hour, CHF10/day or CHF12/day for a combined 1-day parking and public transport ticket.

Alternatively, blue parking zones in the city offer up to 90 minutes free parking while white parking zones offer a maximum of 90 minutes parking for approximately CHF2.80/hour. However, as you might expect, finding a space in these blue or white zones may eat into the time you have available for discovering Geneva. Parking in these zones is also free from 7pm to 7am on Sundays and on bank holidays. There’s also a newly built parking lot at the Cern Globe laboratory, which has plenty of free car parking spaces. Simply park your car rental there and hop on a bus or tram into the city.

Major Highways

If driving from the south east, getting to Geneva from Chamonix usually takes about an hour via the Autoroute Blanche (A40) motorway. A Swiss vignette is required to use the Swiss autoroute system and costs CHF40. If driving from Lyon, the A41 is the main route in and, if driving from the north, the E62. Geneva Airport is just under 6km away from the centre of Geneva via Avenue Louis-Casai.
