Hertz in Cambridge

Car rental in Cambridge is simple and straightforward, thanks to conveniently located Hertz branches around the city. Driving is one of the easiest ways to get around Cambridge and the surrounding area, putting you within easy reach of the city centre, as well as London, Norwich, Peterborough and Birmingham. This means don’t have to rely on public transport, but have the freedom to travel where you want and at your own pace, whether you’re in Cambridge for business or pleasure.

Famous for its internationally renowned university, Cambridge is a historic city particularly noted for its wide open green spaces and its magnificent golden sandstone buildings, making it something of an idyllic British city. Due to the university’s major presence in the city, Cambridge has more than its fair share of museums and galleries, filled with antiquities and collections from around the world. However, if you want to indulge in something quintessentially ‘Cambridge’, then you should go punting on the Cam. If you’re not brave enough to try yourself, guided tours are available. Car enthusiasts, however, can travel a short distance to Huntingdon for go karting fun with the family.

Driving and Parking in Cambridge

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 25 to rent a car in Cambridge, or over 23 if paying an age differential charge. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Cambridge, take a look at our page about renting a car in the United Kingdom.

Cambridge is a very pedestrian-friendly city, so you won’t need to take your car right into the city centre as often. In fact, this can be wise as there is a very complex one-way system at the heart of Cambridge, which can be confusing to new drivers in the city. However, if you’re visiting the areas surrounding the city centre, your car will be invaluable. Remember that the British drive on the left and pass on the right and that speed limits fluctuate depending on the stretch of road you’re on — so be aware of local signs. There is also no UK version of “right on a red”. Here red means stop and you should wait for the green light before turning in either direction.

Parking in Cambridge can be challenging due to a shortage of spaces — and it can be pricey. The local council recommends the use of the Park + Ride scheme, where you can park for free on the outskirts and pay for a short return bus journey into town.

Driving in and around Cambridge

Key Routes

Cambridge is surrounded by a ringroad, making getting about easier than having to navigate your way through the city centre. The road accesses most parts of the city, including the various colleges — although bear in mind that this can get busy, especially around the start and end of term. The beautiful Regent Street and St Andrew’s Street cut through the city centre and, while this can be congested, they take in some of Cambridge’s most beautiful architecture.

Major Highways

When you rent a car in Cambridge, you’ll find it well served for accessing other major towns and cities. The A14, for instance will get you to neighbouring Peterborough if you use it to connect to the A1, or it can take you to Birmingham in less than two hours if you use it to join the M6 - which is also the gateway to the North West. If you want to explore Britain’s capital of London, a two-hour drive down the M11 is all it takes, with no need to catch a train.
