Driving and Parking in Newcastle

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 21 to rent a car in Newcastle. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Newcastle, take a look at our page about renting a car in the UK.

If you rent a car in Newcastle there are several excellent and flexible options available when it comes to parking in the city. The Council manages a number of large car parks throughout the city, and there is also plentiful on-street metered parking along with private car parks.

Newcastle City Council runs a total of eight multi-storey car parks in the city centre alone, and 48 car parks at surface level. There’s free parking after 5.00pm under the ‘Alive after Five’ initiative to support local businesses. All car parks in Newcastle feature a tariff board from which motorists can read the rate. Many of the ticket machines take only coins, so it is advisable to travel with a supply of these readily available.

Key routes

Newcastle lies at the junction of the A1 between London and Edinburgh and the A69 route to Carlisle. There are excellent roads across the city which you can use to access the attractions as well as to easily get onto main routes to other parts of the country.

The A1 is a major East Coast route which goes past the centre of Newcastle just to the west. The A19 in the east dives under the Tyne Tunnel on the eastern side.

During peak times the traffic into the Tyne Tunnel can be congested, although a new parallel tunnel was opened recently to allow one-way travel in both directions.

Major Highways

The A167 crosses the famous Tyne Bridge and takes drivers right into the city centre from both the north and the south. Take this route for entering and exiting the shopping area and for exploring farther afield by car. Bear a number of points in mind when using UK roads in general:

• Always drive on the left side of the road and overtake on the right.
• At roundabouts you must give way on the right.
• The speed limit is given in miles per hour and this is 70mph on the motorways. In built-up and residential areas it is typically 30mph but often drops to 20mph, so keep one eye on the signs.
• Speed cameras are pretty much ubiquitous so watch your speed at all times. There are also many humps in residential areas.
• Unlike in the States, a red traffic light means you must stop, and may not make a right turn even with a clear exit.
