Hertz in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, a sprawling metropolis in southern California, is famous for being the media and entertainment capital of the world. Home to the studios of Paramount, Universal and Warner Brothers, the city of Angels is bold, brash and busy. Hire a Hertz car rental in Los Angeles and you’ll feel as if you’re driving straight onto a film set.

Los Angeles is a dizzying combination of interstates, state routes and US highways. If you’re driving on a freeway marked by a white shield you’re on a US highway, a state route if marked by a green shield and an interstate if marked by a blue and red shield. It’s not uncommon for LA freeways to be jammed with traffic throughout the day, but more so between 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm. Hollywood and Downtown are also fairly busy during the evening at weekends. The Los Angeles basin is laid out on a grid with streets running from north to south and east to west, so if you keep your eye on the sun, you should be able to navigate in your Hertz car rental in Los Angeles, sight see and not get lost at the same time.

Driving and Parking in Los Angeles

You will need a full driving license and must be over 21 to rent a car in Los Angeles. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Los Angeles, take a look at our page about renting a car in the USA.

As you might expect in a city with six, ten and twelve lane freeways, parking spaces in LA are at a premium. Los Angeles observes the colored curb parking regulations that are in place throughout the state. Red curbs denote prohibited parking and shopping, white curbs allow for picking up and dropping off, yellow for deliveries, green for short term parking and blue curbs denote disabled parking.

In this city of cars there is plenty of parking to be found, however. A monthly parking pass can be purchased for just $30 to use the city lots 614 and 671 off Wilshire Boulevard. Angelians in the know use the hidden Pershing Square Garage, a massive garage underneath Pershing Square in Downtown LA. Free parking is also often available on Washington Boulevard in Culver City, just off Sepulveda Boulevard. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation also has an ExpressPark scheme which includes over 6000 meters and 7500 lot spaces downtown. ExpressPark spots vary in cost and you need to buy a card to use the scheme.

Driving in and around Los Angeles

Key Routes

There are many streets that run from the Santa Monica and Venice beaches to Downtown LA. Santa Monica Boulevard is a large busy street that takes you through Beverly Hills, north up to West Hollywood and Hollywood before merging with Sunset Boulevard just west of Downtown LA. Sunset Boulevard winds northeast from the ocean above Santa Monica, takes a straight path east through West Hollywood as the famous Sunset Strip before heading southeast into Downtown LA, where it changes into Cesar Chavez Avenue. Venice Boulevard leads from Venice Beach to south Downtown LA, while Washington Boulevard is another good option for crossing town.

Major Highways

Several major freeways run through or around downtown Los Angeles including the 5, the 10, the 60, the 101, and the 110. Avoid the 5 at all costs during rush hours! These freeways come together at the East Los Angeles Interchange, one of the busiest freeway interchanges in the world. Scenic drives that take you into and out of the city include the Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Monica to Zuma Beach, North Sepulveda Boulevard from Redondo Beach to Manhattan Beach and Palos Verdes Drive from Palos Verdes Estates to San Pedro.
