Hertz in San Francisco

San Francisco is in northern California, on a peninsula surrounded by San Francisco bay and the Pacific Ocean. Famous attractions include Alcatraz prison on Alcatraz Island in the bay, its most distinctive skyscraper the Transamerica Pyramid, and of course the iconic Golden Gate Bridge – the 'money shot' of every film or TV programme shot in the city. Immerse yourself in the city’s fabulousness by choosing a Hertz car rental in San Francisco.

San Francisco is relatively small, just seven miles by seven miles (11km by 11km). It’s also surrounded by 43 hills while downtown has its fair share of steep roads too. Because of its peninsula location, San Francisco is often extremely foggy with the hills and all but the tallest buildings often obscured from sight. The fog rarely comes down to street level, but combined with colourful, quirky buildings, trams, cyclists, buses and pedestrians and it can sometimes be a challenge to remember to keep your eyes on the roads, rather than all the fascinating sights and spectacles around you as San Fran goes about its business. Having said that, no trip to California is complete without leasing a Hertz car rental in San Francisco. Discovering this magical city by car is certain to leave you spellbound.

Driving and Parking in San Francisco

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 21 to rent a car in San Francisco. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in San Francisco, take a look at our page about renting a car in the USA.

Unlike other cities in California and the States, the car isn’t automatically the king in this city. In San Francisco, pedestrians, trams, cyclists and buses have right of way. This leads to a much more laid-back and much less frenetic style of driving. Try to assimilate the cool and laid back vibes of the city into your driving and enjoy the journey, rather than merely hanker for your destination.

San Francisco also observes the coloured road markings to be found throughout the state of California. Red curbs denote prohibited parking and shopping, white curbs allow for picking up and dropping off, yellow for deliveries, green for short term parking and blue curbs denote disabled parking. There’s perhaps even more reason to pay attention to these curb markings in San Francisco too: park in a space painted red and you run the risk of the back end of your Hertz car rental in San Francisco being crunched by a Muni train as it swings round!

Because cars don’t take priority in San Francisco, parking spaces are few and far between. If you do find a spot on a hilly street, however, remember to curb your wheels. In other words when facing downhill, turn your front wheels sharply toward the curb, and when facing uphill, turn the wheels away from the curb.

Driving in and around San Francisco

Key Routes

If driving in or through San Francisco, then one destination you should head to is the Golden Gate Bridge. This iconic Art Deco suspension bridge, opened in 1937, has six lanes and is nearly 3km long. Elsewhere in San Francisco, head to Union Square for people watching, the hands-on science museum the Exploratorium at Pier 15, The Embarcadero or, to really test your driving skills, crooked Lombard Street with its hairpin turns.

Major Highways

There are three freeways that lead to San Francisco: Route 101 from the north of the state before continuing onto San Jose, Interstate 280 from the south, and Interstate 80. Market Street is the City’s main street, and runs diagonally from the Ferry Building to the southwest, through the Castro District, before winding into the central and western neighbourhoods. Northward and eastward links to surrounding Bay Area communities are provided by just the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge. San Francisco International Airport is in south San Francisco on the east of the bay and just under 30km from downtown.
