Driving in and around Baltimore

Key routes

There is a large number of major and minor roads criss-crossing the city of Baltimore and extending to other parts of Maryland as well as to neighbouring states, including Interstate Highways and secondary highways. Getting to where you want is easy on the grid system in the city itself.

Baltimore Street divides in two north and south of the city and is one of the main thoroughfares when driving cross-state.

Broadway, which passes the John Hopkins Hospital, is famous as the road George Washington travelled on when he passed through en route to Annapolis to retire from his command of the first American Army.

Major Highways

Take Centre Street to drive to the Mt. Vernon Belvedere neighbourhood and to visit the Contemporary Museum and Walters Art Museum. Take care to keep a few points in mind while driving on these roads and others in the Maryland area:

• You may make a right turn when the lights are on red, provided your exit is clear. The signage occasionally indicated that this is not allowed, so check it first.
• The rule at crossroads, or multiple junctions, is that whichever vehicle arrives there first has the right of way, and you need to give way on the right when both vehicles arrive at the crossroads at the same time.
• If you find yourself behind a school bus that suddenly stops and flashes its red lights then you are required to wait patiently until it starts up again, rather that attempting to overtake.
• The maximum speed limit of 70mph on US highways falls to 30mph when roads run through residential or built-up areas. Allow time if you’re passing a major town, as the traffic can often slow to a virtual halt until the turnoff is passed.
