driving in and around Charlotte

Key routes

Interstate Highways I-85 and I-77 meet in Charlotte, intersecting at the centre of the city, so getting around the region on these is fairly easy. The Beltway is also a convenient feature for drivers, although not yet completed, as it makes navigation within the city an easy matter.

Tryon Street and Trade Street are the main Charlotte thoroughfares for the uptown district.

Charlotte Route 4 links the main roads in the city between I-485 and I-277.

The Charlotte beltway is known as the ‘485’ by the locals and is sometimes labelled as such on road maps of the city.

Major Highways

I-277 forms a loop within the city which completely encircles the downtown area. It is usually referred to by the names of its two sections, the Brookshire Freeway and the John Belk Freeway. When driving on this and other roads in the area bear a few things in mind:

• When you come across a school bus with flashing lights do not attempt to overtake but simply wait until it starts moving again and this applies to oncoming traffic too.
• Always carry your full driver documentation in the car or on your person, to produce if you’re stopped by traffic police for a spot check.
• The normal speed limit is 70mph on state highways, although this reduces considerably in built-up and residential areas, where 30mph is more usual. Keep an eye on the signs because regular checks are carried out. Bear in mind that even on major Interstate Highways such as I-77 the traffic can slow to a crawl as it passes city limits, so be aware of the conditions in advance.
• Across the States, you are allowed to turn right on a red light when the traffic is stationary, which is not the case in Europe.
