Montreal is the ideal city for driving around. It’s located on a beautiful island in the mighty Saint Lawrence River, and at its heart is triple-peaked Mount Royal, after which Montreal is named. This majestic scenery makes the perfect backdrop for motoring, and the excellent local road system and well-maintained highways ensure that getting around the wider area is no problem at all. Driving and Parking in Montreal

You will need a full driving license and must be over 21 to rent a car in Montreal. You will also need to have an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Montreal, take a look at our page about renting a car in Canada.

If you rent a car in Montreal you may find parking to be a problem, as the downtown area especially is rather congested. The parking signs can be open to misinterpretation too, so be careful to double-check them to avoid a hefty fine.

If you use the on-street parking, remember the number of your parking slot and you can pay for it downtown at any of the pay stations there. There are also several open and covered parking lots available. Compared with other cities in North America, parking rates in Montreal are relatively inexpensive, varying between $12 and $20 for a 24-hour stay. Most of the parking lots charge for stays of between 20 or 30 minutes.

Driving in and around Montreal

Key routes

Montreal has an excellent network of streets and roads, with up-to-date signage and good road markings. It’s impossible to get lost here and whether you’re staying in the suburbs or downtown you’ll find it easy to navigate by car.

Ste Catherine Street is the main connecting artery for the city, and most of the other main streets cross it at some point.

Bishop Street, Crescent Street and St Laurent Street are popular with café society and are lined with boutique outlets.

Major highways

Ste Catherine Street is the main thoroughfare in Montreal, running through the heart of the downtown area and lined with restaurants, bars and shopping malls. It connects the eastern and western suburbs and intersects with other streets in the north and south of the city. When using the roads in and around Montreal be sure to bear a few things in mind:

• As in the US, making a right turn on a red light is permitted in Quebec but this is not the case in Montreal. Here, you wait until the light turns green and an arrow flashes up.
• A blinking green light means that you have right of way over oncoming traffic.
• In Quebec, an ‘Arret’ sign means you have to stop. Curiously, in France itself the stop signs read ‘Stop’.
• Lane markings are frequently ignored by motorists here, especially when they are narrow, so be sure to check the traffic around you at all times before making a lane change.
• During the winter months, it’s the law in Quebec to have winter tyres fitted to your car.
• Most of the signs will be in French. A bridge, for instance, will be marked as ‘Pont’.
