Rent the Toyota Prado 2.4L in Dubai

The Prado is the most requested large SUV on the UAE rental market, and the current generation is the best version Toyota has built. It is also the first Prado to drop below a six-cylinder engine, which is the thing most people want reassurance about before they book.

The 2.4-litre turbo makes more power, not less

The outgoing naturally aspirated engine produced 163hp. The 2,398cc turbocharged four-cylinder that replaced it produces 267hp and 430Nm of torque, with peak torque available from 1,700rpm. On paper and on the road, the smaller engine is comprehensively the stronger one.

Low-end torque is what matters in this market. Pulling away in soft sand, climbing a graded incline, or overtaking with seven people and luggage on board are all easier in the turbo car. Fuel consumption is rated at 10.6 kmpl, and an 8-speed automatic is standard across every UAE variant.

Seven seats and what fits behind them

The third row is genuinely usable for adults on shorter journeys and comfortable for children on longer ones. Second-row legroom is generous. With the third row folded flat the load bay is substantial — enough for four people's luggage plus camping equipment.

The cabin has been comprehensively upgraded over the previous generation: a large central touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, and a power back door. The upright, boxy body means headroom is good in all three rows, which is not true of every seven-seater in this class. If you are choosing between seven-seat rentals, the Prado's third row is one of the better ones.

Genuine capability, not the appearance of it

Full-time four-wheel drive with a transfer case for high and low gearing, plus central and rear differential locks, gives the Prado real off-road specification. This is a ladder-frame vehicle built for terrain, not a crossover with plastic cladding.

Standard equipment includes seven airbags, crawl control, hill descent control, adaptive cruise control, a pre-collision system and lane trace assist. LED headlights with three projectors and 18-inch alloy wheels complete a package that works as well on Sheikh Zayed Road as it does heading to Hatta or the Liwa dunes.

Prado or Land Cruiser?

The Land Cruiser is larger, more powerful and more expensive to rent. It seats eight, carries a twin-turbo V6, and has a presence the Prado does not. The Prado is shorter, easier to park in Dubai's multi-storey car parks, cheaper per day, and capable of almost everything the Land Cruiser can do. For most renters the Prado is the better-judged choice; book the Land Cruiser when you need the extra seat or the extra statement.
