Hertz in Geneva Airport French Side (GVA)

Geneva International Airport is situated 4km to the west of Geneva, Switzerland’s second most populous city, and in 2016 almost 17 million passengers passed through its two terminals. Connected to Geneva and other cities across Switzerland by an excellent system of highways, the airport is convenient for exploring the wider region by car, with a selection of both budget and luxury vehicles from Hertz Car Rental.

Hertz Car Rental has been a leader in the business of providing international customers with high-quality rental vehicles for almost a century, helping many millions of drivers to explore the world in comfort and style. Customers arriving at the Geneva International Airport branch of Hertz Car Rental enjoy the convenience afforded by self-drive and can take their pick from a wide choice of vehicles.

About the airport

Geneva International Airport was founded in 1919. Today’s two terminals were completed just after the Second World War, and since the 1960s a second runway and links to the Swiss main railway system have been added.

The two passenger terminals are T1 and T2, with T1 the main terminal. This is, in turn, is further divided into five separate piers (A, B, C, D and F), with F is known as the French Sector.

As Geneva International Airport was built partly on Swiss and partly on French territory, two sectors were developed - a legacy from the days when entry into Switzerland was passport controlled. As Switzerland joined Schengen in 2008 this is no longer much of an issue, but the physical structures remain.

How to rent a car at Geneva International Airport

The Hertz Car Rental branch is open Monday to Sunday between 7.00am and 11.30pm. Enter the Swiss side from Switzerland and the French side from France, and exit through either side. On exiting through the Swiss side, if you want to rent a car on the French side you simply go to Door One on the Departures level and follow the sign for 'France' to reach the French sector.

You need to be at least 25 years old to rent a car through Hertz at Geneva International Airport, though this reduces to 19 on payment of a young driver daily surcharge.

This applies to one class of car model only. For the other class of high-performance vehicles, you must be at least 25. In addition, you will be required to produce a valid EU driving license or, if you are from a non-EU country, an International Driving Permit (IDP).

You will also need to bring with you a valid passport or if you’re from inside the EU, a valid ID. It is possible to arrange to collect your vehicle in advance, and if this is the case you must produce the relevant documents.

Additional information:

1) Customers who cannot drive themselves, or are unwilling to do so, can take advantage of the Chauffeur-Drive service offered by Hertz Car Rental.

2) Some of the vehicles come with a satellite navigation system fitted. Some drivers will find this useful for navigating the region, and especially for getting around populous cities like Geneva.

Driving in Switzerland

Visitors to Switzerland must have the appropriate level of insurance and a full, valid driving licence in order to drive a hire vehicle. More information on driving in Switzerland can be found here.

Nearby attractions

Switzerland’s road network is well maintained and extensive, with excellent signage even in the more remote parts of the country. Winters can be harsh and long, so the clear signs are particularly useful during the colder weather, if you’re exploring Geneva’s Old Town and cathedral or heading farther afield across Switzerland’s spectacular mountainous landscapes.
