Hertz in Berlin International Airport (TXL)

Berlin International Airport, or Berlin Tegel Airport to give it its proper name, is the fourth largest airport in Germany. Along with the smaller Berlin-Schönefeld Airport, Berlin Tegel serves the German capital and is the main hub for Air Berlin and Germanwings. The airport is due to close 2018 and operations moved over to the brand new Berlin Brandenburg Airport, which is currently under construction.

Germany is a driver’s paradise and there’s nothing like heading out of the airport straight onto the country’s famous autobahns in a top of the range hire car. Alternatively, you might be looking for a convenient way to explore the historic and culturally fascinating city of Berlin. Once you reach the airport, hiring a car couldn’t be simpler – with a branch of Hertz car rental located adjacent to terminal 3, so you can start your German adventure as soon as you land.

About the airport

Berlin International Airport began commercial operations in the late 1950s and it is now one of the largest airports in Germany and the busiest airport serving Berlin – connecting over 20 million passengers annually. The airport comprises of five terminals, although these are all located in the main terminal building, which is constructed in a hexagonal shape to minimise walking distances.

Although smaller than many other international airports, Berlin Tegel Airport has all of the facilities, amenities and services you would expect from a major transport hub – including food outlets, retail spaces, and airport lounges.

How to rent a car at Berlin International Airport

Hiring a car at Berlin International Airport is very straightforward, with a branch of Hertz Car Rental located at the car rental centre, adjacent to Terminal E (open Monday to Friday, between the hours of 0700-2330, Saturday 0800-2300 and Sunday 0800-2330). It’s only a short walk from the service desk to the rental car pick-up and drop-off location.

You must be at least 25 years of age to rent a car in Germany, although this can be lowered to 23 by paying a young driver’s supplementary charge. You must be at least 27 years of age to hire a car from the Prestige Collection. You must also have a valid licence that you’ve held for at least one year. All licences in Roman Script are accepted for renting, however, an International Driving Permit is highly recommended as you may be required to present it to the authorities. With all Non-European Union driver's licences not in Roman Script, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is mandatory.
