Hertz in Reykjavik

With more than four Hertz branches offering affordable and convenient car rental in Reykjavik, getting around the capital of the Land of Fire and Ice is quick, easy, and comfortable. By choosing to rent a car in Reykjavik from Hertz Car Rental you’re freeing yourself from the constraints of the local bus services and, as there’s no rail system in the city, it makes getting around much easier. With car rental options you can choose exactly where and when to visit the best attractions in the area.

There’s always something exciting going on in Reykjavik, with local festivals and celebrations taking place virtually every week. To get a glimpse of the country’s exciting sea-faring history, the Viking Maritime Museum is well worth a visit. However, if you want to see what’s beyond the city, head for Tjornin; a picturesque lake that acts as home to over 40 species of birds. With so much to see and do, renting a car in Reykjavik is the best way to get to see all the things you want to with no fuss.

Driving and Parking in Reykjavik

If you want to rent a car in Reykjavik, you’ll need to be a minimum of 21 years old, have a full UK driving license and a British passport. There’s no upper age limit for car rental in Reykjavik but, different age restrictions apply for some commercial vehicle rentals. For more information about driving rules and regulations, take a look at our page about renting a car in Iceland.

Although there aren’t that many cars in Reykjavik, the roads do get very busy during the morning and afternoon rush hours – and are best avoided at those times. Morning rush hour tends to take place between 7.45am and 9.00am, while afternoon rush hour occurs between 4.00pm and 6.30pm. While the Icelandic version of a rush hour is light compared to the UK, it can add extra time to your journey.

Parking in Reykjavik can be confusing for first-timers. The city is divided into four parking zones: P1, P2, P3 and P4. The basic rule of thumb is that the closer you park to Laugavegur High Street (the main shopping precinct), the more you’ll have to pay. The streets in these zones are either manned by ticket machines or ticket meters. If you find ticket machines, you can either pay by cash or card – however, it’s worth remembering that some of the machines may not accept foreign cards, so it’s always worth having some cash on you. Ticket meters are coin-only.
