Hertz in Rotterdam

If you want to rent a car in Rotterdam, Hertz has a number of branches at key locations, including Rotterdam Central Railway Station and Rotterdam Airport. Driving is one of the easiest ways to get to and around Rotterdam. This means you can get where you want in your own time and at your own pace, ideal whether you’re a holidaymaker or a business traveller.

Rotterdam has the largest port in Europe and is the second largest municipality in the Netherlands, second only to Amsterdam. Although more modern than most Dutch cities it still has its sights to see and explore, with plenty of historic buildings, windmills and churches, as well as family days out at Rotterdam Zoo or one of the city’s many football clubs. Tours of the harbour are also possible and give you an interesting and different perspective on this vibrant location.

Driving and Parking in Rotterdam

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 25 to rent a car in Rotterdam, or over 19 if paying an age differential charge. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Rotterdam, take a look at our page about renting a car in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands has some driving rules that may be unusual for those used to driving in other countries. For instance, right of way on roundabouts can change from place to place. Sometimes you have right of way when on the roundabout, other times you have it when entering the roundabout. Bicycles and mopeds have right of way over cars as well, so be sure to look out for these road users when driving. At junctions, a yellow and white sign in a diamond shape means you have right of way, while a row of white triangular signs means you should give way.

If using on-street parking for your car rental in Rotterdam, you need to purchase a card known locally as a Chipknip. You can top this up with a balance in Euros at most multi-storey car parks and tobacconists, and this will allow you to pay for parking at meters. Although some meters will also accept credit cards, they generally do not accept cash. Parking, however, is easy and there are plenty of on-street spaces and multi-storey car parks available. If you do not wish to drive in the city centre, you can use the Park + Ride facilities on the outskirts of the city.

Driving in and around Rotterdam

Key Routes

Several motorways form a ring road around Rotterdam - the A4, A15, A16 and A20. These allow you to bypass heavier traffic within the city and get to your destination faster. However, if you’re looking for a picturesque drive, head to the roads runningbesides the Nieuwe Mass and take in some beautiful river views as you explore. Similarly, Kralingse Plaslaan forms a ring road around Kralingse Bos, a gorgeous park with a lake, views of which can be seen from the road.

Major Highways

Rotterdam’s motorway network means it’s ideally situated for exploring more of the Netherlands. The A4 will take you to The Hague and then on to Amsterdam within an hour and a half, and there is an easy drive on the A12 to Utrecht. With so much close by, it’s easy to explore all the Netherlands has to offer, while basing yourself in Rotterdam, or embarking on a tour that takes Rotterdam as its starting point. Either way, if you rent a car in Rotterdam, you’ll find it’s simple to organize your trip from the moment you collect your car to the moment you hand back the keys.
