Hertz in Lisbon International Airport (LIS)

Lisbon International Airport is conveniently located in Portugal’s historic capital and is the main gateway to the country. In 2015 over 20 million passengers passed through its two terminals and these numbers will certainly continue to rise as more business and pleasure travellers visit Portugal. Close to the centre of Lisbon, the airport is perfectly located for exploring the city’s attractions by Hertz Car Rental and also for accessing the surrounding area on an extensive and integrated transport system.

Hertz Car Rental has for almost a century now been supplying international customers with quality rental vehicles. In today’s increasingly demanding car rental market it continues to lead the way, allowing customers the great flexibility and comfort that self-drive offers when they fly into Lisbon. Located close to Arrivals in terminal 1, the Hertz Car Rental branch at Lisbon International Airport offers the easiest way to rent a car during your trip to Portugal.

About the airport

Lisbon International Airport opened in 1942, while The Second World War was raging across Europe, originally for seaplanes and then for regular intercontinental traffic. Portugal was neutral at the time and was open to both British and German airlines. An inspiration for the film Casablanca, the airport today is a state-of-the-art installation with many shops, restaurants and a spacious Duty Free area.

Terminal 1 is the main building here, with two check-in halls and a joint departures area with 29 gates and jet-bridges. Terminal 2 is a great deal smaller and is used mainly by low-cost carriers. It is in a separate part of the airport from Terminal 1 and has far fewer facilities. There is however a free shuttle service for passengers wishing to use the Terminal 1 facilities.

How to rent a car at Lisbon International Airport

The Hertz Car Rental branch at Lisbon International Airport is open between Monday and Sunday, 6.00am to 1.00am, with a delivery and collection service which passengers can use out-of-hours to facilitate their ongoing travel arrangements.

You must be aged at least 25 years to rent a car in Portugal, although if you’re under 21 this is possible on payment of a €11.07 young driver surcharge. Certain types of high-performance vehicles are exempt from this. You will need to hold a valid EU driving license or alternatively an International Driving Permit (IDP) should you be arriving in Portugal from a non-EU country. A valid passport will also be required, or just an ID card if you’re from inside the EU. When you arrive at the Hertz rental desk having booked a vehicle in advance you’ll need to have your documentation with you, and you can pay using debit and credit cards.

Additional information:

• Apply online to take advantage of the Hertz delivery and collection service, and check with your Reservation Centre for more details about this.
• If you prefer not to drive the car yourself, or cannot, then Hertz Car Rental can provide you with a Chauffeur-Drive service.

Driving in Portugal

Visitors to Portugal are only allowed to drive hire vehicles with the appropriate insurance and a full licence. More information on driving in Portugal is available here.

Nearby attractions

The roads in Portugal are as good as any in Europe, wide and well maintained, with a network of highways, motorways and trunk roads enabling fast access to all parts of the country. The roads in and around Lisbon are particularly good, and with attractions such as the historic Belem Tower, bustling Rossio Square and National Museum of Ancient Art within easy reach you’ll be able to explore all the sights easily by Hertz rental car.
