Hertz in Durban

Hertz Car Rental in Durban knows that driving is by far the best way to get around the city, so they’ve made it quick and easy to hire a car with branches both at the airport and in the city itself. Driving gives you the opportunity to see the city and more of the South African coast when you want to — without having to use public transport. Driving is also a great way to travel around the area while keeping yourself out of the sun — perfect if your journey is taking place at the height of the day.

Durban is the third largest city in South Africa and is incredibly popular with tourists thanks to its ‘Golden Mile’ of sandy beaches, the ready availability of water sports and the close proximity of a number of wildlife attractions. With glorious coastal drives and easy-to-navigate city streets, Durban is also a great destination for those wanting to explore by car.

Driving and Parking in Durban

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 18 to rent a car in Durban. If you are from outside South Africa you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Durban, take a look at our page about renting a car in South Africa.

When you rent a car in Durban, it’s advisable to make sure your GPS or road map is up to date as the local government has changed several street names over the last few years. Although it’s still easy to find your way around, this will save any confusion. As with any big city, Durban becomes congested around rush hour times, but you should also be aware that roads around the Golden Mile will become busy during peak season — especially around Christmas.

Parking in Durban is concentrated around the harbour area, although there are not as many spaces as you would expect from such a big city. If your accommodation has parking, the safest bet is to park there and walk to the harbour area. However, there are several websites that allow you to pre-book a space so this can be a good option if you do need to drive into that area.

Driving in and around Durban

Key Routes

Durban is a very easy city to get around with some major roads cutting through the city to bypass many of the smaller city streets. This includes the N2, which cuts across many of Durban’s more industrial areas, and the N3, which leads down into the harbour district.

If you are looking for more scenic routes through the city, the coastal roads of Erskine Terrace, O R Tambo Parade and Snell Parade offer fabulous views of the beach and ocean. If you are staying in a sea view hotel, it will likely be found along one of these roads, and you will also find the bulk of the harbour area’s parking here too. Sylvester Ntuli Road, on the other hand, takes in much of Durban’s business district, including the Olive Convention Centre.

Major Highways

If you rent a car in Durban, you will find it well connected to other major South African cities. The N3 connects directly with Johannesburg if you are up for a long drive. If, on the other hand, you want to tour more of the South African coast, a stunning drive along the N2 takes you, within less than two hours, past the Amatikulu Nature Reserve to the picturesque harbour town of Richards Bay. Just remember that in South Africa you drive on the left and pass on the right and your journey will be fine!
