Driving in and around Johannesburg

Key Routes

The M1 motorway route is the principal road through Johannesburg. It cuts right through the heart of the city, with junctions leading easily to different neighbourhoods and attractions. The route helps bypass many of the city’s streets, making it easier to navigate if you are not overly familiar with Johannesburg.

Running across the city and taking in many of the key neighbourhoods, including the Fashion District, is the Albertina Sisulu Road. Again, it connects to smaller neighbourhood streets, allowing you to cut directly across the city and not have to navigate some of the more labyrinthine areas.

Major Highways

The N1 Bypass acts as a ring road around Johannesburg, connecting it to the rest of South Africa via a network of national and provincial routes. From here you can easily drive to neighbouring Pretoria in just over half an hour. If you rent a car in Johannesburg, it’s worth remembering some local rules of the road to make your journey as pleasant and straightforward as possible.

• South Africans drive on the left and pass on the right on all roads. If you are on a dual carriageway or motorway, you would generally drive in the left lane to allow cars to pass on the right.
• Speed limits are adhered to and can change from place to place on the same stretch of road so keep an eye out for local signage.
• Seat belts are mandatory for everyone in the car.
• The drink-driving limit is less than 0.05mg, so if you are driving it is generally best not to even have one drink.
• It is illegal to use mobile devices while driving.
