Hertz in Geneva airport (GVA)

Although Geneva airport is in Switzerland, it is right on the Swiss border with France and, as such, has a Swiss side and a French side. It sees more than 15 million passengers pass through its terminal a year thanks to its ideal situation, which allows you to explore Geneva – just 15 minutes away — or some of the stunning French country across the border.

Hertz Car Rental has branches on both the Swiss and French sides of Geneva airport, allowing you to take advantage of our 90 years of expertise no matter where your journey is taking you.

About the airport

Established in 1919, Geneva Airport welcomed its first flight the following year and first commercial routes in 1922. Today it serves 142 destinations, 23 of which are intercontinental. It is particularly popular with business travellers thanks to Switzerland’s banking industry, as well as skiers and snowboarders heading for the many winter sports resorts in the region.

The airport has two terminals, although Terminal 2 is only used for certain flights during the winter season. Terminal 1 is open all year round. Passengers in Terminal 1 who wish to access the French sector of the airport on arrival need to head to the Swiss check-in area after going through Swiss customs and then follow signs for ‘destination France’.

How to rent a car at Geneva airport

As there is a Hertz Car Rental branch on both the Swiss side and French side of the airport, please ensure you arrange your collection from the appropriate side.

The minimum age for renting a car at both the Swiss side and French side branches is 25. This can be reduced to 19 on the Swiss side and 21 on the French side with a young driver surcharge.

On both sides, a valid drivers licence is required along with an International Drivers Permit (IDP) for non-EU members. Domestic and EU renters will need to show either a valid passport or national identity card, while non-EU renters will require their passport. You will also need to show your credit or debit card and your reservation details if you have pre-booked.

Driving in Switzerland

Visitors to Switzerland are only allowed to drive hire vehicles with the appropriate insurance and a full licence. More information on driving in Switzerland.
