Hertz in Aberdeen

Whether you’re visiting Scotland on holiday or for business, car rental in Aberdeen is made easy thanks to Hertz’s conveniently located branches — including at the airport. Chillier weather in the north, particularly in autumn and winter, means that driving a car is one of the most comfortable way to get around, whether you’re staying close to the city of Aberdeen, or are planning to see more of Scotland on a road trip around the Highlands.

Aberdeen is the third largest city in Scotland and is a prosperous location, thanks to North Sea oil. The city is full of some seriously grand architecture too, produced from local granite, particularly in the Old Aberdeen area of the city. This distinctive rock has a high mica content that makes it literally sparkle in the sun.

There’s a lot to do in Aberdeen, including a visit to the beach, a tour of local art galleries and museums or even an afternoon spent in the tranquil Union Terrace Gardens. If you fancy a day at the race track, a short drive from the city centre will take you to Kartstart Aberdeen, where you can indulge in some go-karting with your family or friends.

Driving and Parking in Aberdeen

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 25 to rent a car in Aberdeen, or over 23 if paying an age differential charge. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Aberdeen, take a look at our page about renting a car in the United Kingdom.

If you are not originally from the United Kingdom, when you rent a car in Aberdeen you must remember that the British drive on the left and overtake on the right. Speed limits are heavily enforced in the UK, usually with the use of speed cameras, so be sure to pay attention to local signage. In built-up areas, limits range from 20 mph to 40 mph, rising to 60 mph on open roads and 70 mph on motorways. These can change, according to conditions. At junctions with traffic lights, there is no UK equivalent of “right on red”. Instead, red means stop and you should wait for the green signal to move.

As with most city centres, finding a parking in Aberdeen can take some time, particularly during peak times. However, you will find several commercially managed car parks around the city, as well as council-run on-street parking and pay and display car parks. Be sure to check restrictions and charges before leaving your car.

Driving in and around Aberdeen

Key Routes

The A90 runs around Aberdeen, making it easier to get from one side of the city to another. However, to get closer to the coast or the city centre, you will generally have to rely on city streets. The A944 cuts right through the middle of the city, granting fairly easy access to most areas, but if it’s a picturesque drive you’re looking for, head to the Esplanade for a drive along the seafront.

Major Highways

Aberdeen is well served by A roads and motorways taking you to neighbouring cities, although drives can be long. The A96 will get you to Inverness in less than three hours, while the A90 can get you to Dundee and Perth in less than two hours, before becoming the M90 and taking you to the historic city of Edinburgh. Although these are fairly long drives, they are just as quick as the train and infinitely more straightforward.
