Driving and Parking in Glasgow

You will need a full driving license and must be over 23 to rent a car in Glasgow. If you are from outside the European Union you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Glasgow, take a look at our page about renting a car in the United Kingdom (UK).

Glasgow can be a tricky city to navigate for visitors thanks to its one-way system filtering traffic about the city, enforced bus lanes and several pedestrianised streets. As the city centre itself is quite compact, it’s advisable to park your car up for the day if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing as much of the city is accessible on foot. If you do need to drive within the city centre when you rent a car in Glasgow, plan out your route before you travel so you know which roads you can access.

There are different parking regulations in force around Glasgow city centre but signs will let you know if and when you can park in a particular space. Most street parking uses a Pay & Display system where you purchase your parking for a set period of time. However, there are also plenty of multi-storey car parks around the city with 24-hour availability, and there are several Park & Ride services on the outskirts where it’s perfectly safe to park your hire car.

Driving in and around Glasgow

Key Routes

There are many lovely routes through the city of Glasgow. Clyde Street and Clyde Place on either side of the river offer fantastic views of the River Clyde and give access to some of the city’s fantastic bridges.

Also worth driving is the area around Glasgow Cathedral, where you can see some beautiful parts of the city including the cathedral itself and the Necropolis - a grand Victorian cemetery.

Major Highways

The main routes in and out of the city are the motorway system, which you will become very familiar with if you rent a car in Glasgow. The M8, M74, M77 and M80 all radiate out from the city, The M8 is particularly of note as it links directly with the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. Outside of the city, the road system is the same as the rest of the UK, with motorways linking with ‘A’ and ‘B’ roads in order to connect with local streets.

In the UK, driving is on the left and overtaking is on the right and you will find roundabouts a common occurrence. Give way to vehicles on your right and always bear to the left on entering a roundabout. Speed limits are enforced, with speed cameras in use across the United Kingdom. For cars, these limits are 70mph on motorways and dual carriageways, 60mph outside built-up areas and 30mph within built-up areas. This usually reduces to 20mph around schools and residential roads, but you will find speed limits are always clearly signposted.
