Hertz in New Jersey

New Jersey is one of the most popular destinations with tourists and business travelers alike, thanks to its beautiful beaches and close proximity to New York City. Renting a car in New Jersey is one of the easiest ways to explore the state, as it gives you the option to travel between cities such as Jersey City, Hoboken, Atlantic City and Princeton, as well as heading across the George Washington Bridge into New York. Hertz Car Rental makes it simple and easy thanks to more than 70 branches across the state.

If you love the outdoors, renting a car is a great way to explore, whether it’s the Jersey Shore beaches, the Delaware River or Lake Hopatcong. Driving lets you see all of the sights and cities at your own pace.

Driving and Parking in New Jersey

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 25 to rent a car in New Jersey, or over 18 for certain vehicles upon payment of an age differential charge. If you are from outside the United States of America you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in New Jersey, take a look at our page about renting a car in the USA.
Driving in New Jersey is fairly straightforward as long as you remember that large cities and towns will become congested around rush hour. There are several toll bridges, particularly around the shore, and unlike in many other parts of the United States you will often come across roundabouts on many highways.

When you rent a car in New Jersey, you will find that parking varies from place to place. The state’s major cities have a wide selection of parking lots, garages and on-street parking, with rates and times varying from location to location. Be sure to check local signs for regional parking restrictions.

Driving in and around New Jersey

Key Routes

The majority of cities in New Jersey are served by I-95, either directly or via a connection with another interstate or US highway. I-95 is part of the New Jersey Turnpike, which is a toll road. Another key toll road is the Garden State Parkway, which predominantly covers the Jersey Shore area. The tolls for the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway vary depending on the day and time you are travelling, as well as your mileage.

These routes allow you to explore New Jersey’s major cities while easily, by connecting with smaller, local roads at key points.

Major Highways

New Jersey is well connected by road to the surrounding states of Pennsylvania and New York, using the I-76 and I-95 respectively, making it convenient for visiting both NYC and Philadelphia.

• In New Jersey, as in the rest of the USA, you drive on the right hand side and pass on the left.
• Speed limits are 65mph for rural interstates and 55mph on urban interstates. Speed limits for built up areas are considerably lower so be sure to read local signage when driving.
• There is a complete ban on using handheld devices for either calls or text services while driving.
• Seat belts are mandatory for the driver and any passengers.
• A suitable child safety seat is required for all children under the age of eight. Children can only use the adult safety belt if they are over eight and/or more than 57” in height.
• There is a zero tolerance policy for driving under the influence of drugs.
• Drink driving laws are strictly enforced and you may well come across state-run sobriety checkpoints.
