Hertz in Cleveland

Hertz car rental in Cleveland is simple and stress-free, and with so many great things to enjoy in Ohio’s major city you’ll find this by far the best way of getting around. To rent a car in Cleveland, use one of the city’s many conveniently located Hertz rental branches.

Cleveland is in many ways one of the best cities in the US for driving around. It has a good road network and clear signage, with easy access to other parts of Ohio and beyond using the Interstate Highways. Use your hire car to get quickly and easily to local attractions such as the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Cleveland Museum of Art, or to enjoy a show in Playhouse Square. There’s plenty of parking and you’ll be able to travel in comfort and style from door to door.

Driving and Parking in Cleveland

You will need a full driving licence and must be over 21 to rent a car in Cleveland. If you are from outside the US you will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For more information about driving regulations in Cleveland, take a look at our page about renting a car in the USA.

If you rent a car in Cleveland you’ll find that there are plenty of parking options in the city. Even in the built-up downtown area, you can choose between metered on-street parking, free hotel parking and parking garages. Free valet services are common off-street and in private parks, but you should offer a tip of a few dollars.

The average daily charge for parking in a Cleveland downtown garage is about $10. If you’re in the central area for a short period it makes better sense to use the numerous surface lots, where you’ll be able to park for less than $5 per day. Bear in mind however that when events like Independence Day are being held here the rates can shoot up to $20 or much more.

Driving in and around Cleveland

Key routes

Cleveland has a comprehensive road network that includes several interstate highways as well as numerous freeways.

Interstate 77 is the city’s oldest freeway. It connects the downtown district with the southern suburbs, Ohio Turnpike and Akron.

Interstate 90 connects up the east and west areas of Cleveland and includes The Inner Belt, a confluence of several freeways in the city.

The Outerbelt East and Outerbelt South are loops of I-271 and I-480 respectively and are heavily congested during peak times.

Major highways

US-42 is an east-west interstate highway that runs between Louisville in Kentucky and Ohio. There are many major cities along the route, including London, Mansfield, Medina and Xenia, and service stations at frequent intervals. Make sure to observe a few rules of the road whilst driving in these parts:

• The speed limit when driving on motorways is 70mph, reducing to 30mph when you enter built-up areas like city suburbs.
• You can make right-hand turns at red lights in the US, although there are exceptions to this so you should always check the signage.
• US roads like those in and around Cleveland have a carpool lane, also known as an HOV (High-occupancy vehicle lane) for use when congestion is especially bad. Only cars with a driver and at least one passenger are allowed to use it, under certain conditions.
• At crossroads, also known as multiple junctions, you have right of way if you’re the first to arrive, otherwise vehicles always give way to the right.
• Remain patiently behind parked school buses with flashing lights, until they’re ready to depart. This also applies to oncoming cars.
