Driving in and around Seattle

Key routes

Seattle’s road layout is based on rectangular street grids, so it’s easy to navigate your way around by map or sat-nav. There are a total of 21 freeways which use ramp meters to assist traffic movement. Interstate 5 is the widest and biggest of these and will take you right through the central area.

Interstate 90 leaves Seattle by the eastern route and terminates eventually in Boston.

Most of the other freeways travel in a north-south direction and have four lanes, two for each direction.

The West Marginal Way forms part of SR 99/SR 599 and crosses the Alaskan Way Viaduct.

Major highways

This is Seattle’s major freeway and it connects with Interstate 405, passing Seatac International Airport in Seattle’s inner suburbs en route. The express lanes carry traffic heading south in the morning and north in the afternoon. When driving in and around Seattle take note of a few points:

• There are many stop signs in Seattle and heavy penalties for jumping the lights.
• Seattle is an unusually wet city, with higher than average annual rainfall. Drive slowly in wet conditions and make sure you have your screen wash full. Take the turns more slowly even if it’s not actually raining, as the road surface may well be slick.
• The downtown area is very congested, with lots of pedestrian crossings, so exercise plenty of patience.
• There are an unusually high number of one-way streets in Seattle and orientation can be tricky. It is permitted to take left-hand turns from the central lane even when the light is on red.
• The green boxes near intersections are for cyclists and were recently added to the roads in and around Seattle. Always check your blind spots for cyclists and allow them at least three feet when overtaking.
